I was chatting with my neighbor last evening about some of the underlying issues with today’s anti-American movement. We here a lot of negativity swirling around. We came to the notion that many people by and large have lost their patriotism, pride. A growing number of Americans hate our country, and are seeking ways to destroy it from within.

I remember when I received my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor upon completing Marine Corps boot camp. It is a moment I’ll always cherish, and filled me with great pride as I am a 3rd generation marine.

My neighbor brought up how Israel mandates all young people to serve a minimum of 2 years to their armed forces. I don’t know the specifics or anything, but believe something like this can be used to quell what is currently happening in this country. Our youth are being corrupted within the educational system and our universities.

The marines gave me drive, focus, and discipline that I greatly needed. Do you think having a system like this can work for our country? Why or why not.

I don’t think the majority of 18 - 20 year olds in the US would be physically capable of qualifying for boot camp, much less actually completing it.

I was in The Army first, and then The Marine Corps, had to do both Army Basic Training and USMC Boot Camp. I joined, I wanted to do well and was determined to do my best. When I first went to Army Basic, the draft had ended, but there were still some guys that were only there, because a judge had given them a choice: You can join The Army, or go to jail. Most of those guys didn't give a crap, big time screw ups. I don't think we need that in The Military these days.
What I think might work better, is a mandatory work service to provide labor on Federal Projects and National parks and stuff. Pay that is comparable to a private's pay.

Another thing is, social media has already turned so many into lefties now, by the time they are military age, I would rather not be giving them weapon and tactical training.

Life without discipline is what you are seeing in our cities today. Parents have abandoned their responsibilities so that they can be their children's "friend" (or "baby daddy" as the case may be). Regimentation needs to begin in the home because without it there is chaos. The military may not be the total answer, but it is probably the best remaining option.

It didn't work in Vietnam, it won't work now.

I joined because I wanted to. My father served, many other relatives did as well. It's tradition in my family. That's the big difference here, with an all-volunteer force the vast majority of service members want to be there. So sure, it's not a shock that a post-draft era veteran would likely be a patriot. Despite the eventual big green weenie, you still had pride in your country.

It's bad enough you get one or two who don't want to be there in a unit to frick up morale. Imagine that being half the unit.

frick. No.

CHOOSING to serve earns one respect and opens many doors. But it should always be a choice.

No, it does not need to be mandatory. We already have enough people in here that are not worth a shite and/or are Marxist. We need less of them, not more.

I enlisted in US Army at 27 and agree with the Devil Dog OP. Going through training teaches concepts that I doubt you would get in civil service. I could well be wrong but the sense of team and reliance of team under stress would be difficult to replicate. You also get sent to areas you are not familiar with and live with people you never met 24/7, You are forced to adapt and maintain performance.

I learned more about myself and my limits than I could have anywhere else. I grew up. I learned to respect authority and how the chain of command works. I learned that the biggest part of leadership was taking care of my men.

That doesn't help anybody, and would cost too much wasted time and money.

frick no I served 10 years in the U.S. Army. We already have enough dead weight as it is.

I’m 100% for mandatory civil service though. Put these frickers to work in the modern day CCC.

No, mandatory conscription is basically a form of mild slavery.

I'm pretty sure the majority of these people have never served.

Basic training isnt character reform school. Most people who go in with shot attitudes are weeded out. That and the limitations on Drill Sargeants wouldn't allow for the proper "corrective training" to "whip them into shape."

So no, this is a bad idea that would water down our military and not allow the proper training for those who want to be there bc drills would have to spend more time on the frick ups and less time training.

I agree I respect the hell out of anyone that serves/have served. But there is ZERO reason today to make it mandatory.

America isn’t going to be “fixed” by making 18 year olds serve two years in the military. Imo best way to fix it is by allowing Gods Grace back into our schools and public. And actually stand ground and teach values in grade school.

To suggest something like the military be mandatory may sound like it’s coming from a conservative but this is so far left it’s unreal. You sound like a communist. Go to bed .

Most HS graduates should not be in college. To the extent the brain doesn't fully develop until the age of 25, including transitioning from making decisions based on feelings to using rational behavior, they are easier to brainwash from those who teach about feelings. These kids are easily swayed by those in universities who are thinking from the right side of the brain, which is a lot easier and takes very little reading and comprehension. They might start out pre-med but they end up in psychology, sociology, etc. and eventually their parents' basement, not to come out until the next protest.
