From Rosenstein's appointment:

quote:

(b) The Special Counsel is authorized to conduct the investigation confinned by then-FBI Director James 8. Corney in testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on March 20, 2017, including: (i) any links and/or coordination bet ween the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump; and

(ii) any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation; and

(iii) any other matters within the scope of 28 C.F.R. § 600.4(a).

(c) If the Special Counsel believes it is necessary and appropriate, the Special Counsel is authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters.

Essentially Manafort is saying "yes I committed the crimes, but you shouldn't have been able to find out." Not the direction I'd take.

Why not? That defense works all the time.

Manafort sues Mueller, Justice Department

President Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, has filed a lawsuit challenging the authority of special counsel Robert Mueller.

In a court filing, lawyers for Manafort argue that the order establishing Mueller's investigation is overly broad and not permitted under Justice Department regulations.

“The investigation of Mr. Manafort is completely unmoored from the Special Counsel’s original jurisdiction to investigate ‘any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,’” the complaint reads. “It has instead focused on unrelated, decade-old business dealings — specifically, Ukraine political campaign consulting activities of Mr. Manafort.”

If he's honest, he'll admit that he's OK with it because it's the other team being affected.

This does not sound like the conduct of a man selling out Donald Trump.

It sounds like he re-upped on his retainer and now the associates situated in the bowels of whichever law firm he hired are finding ever more interesting ways to burn through it.

He's trying to have Mueller dismissed for investigating stuff that isn't squarely about collusion. Gonna take a wild guess that convincing the judiciary that the DOJ doesn't know what it's doing is gonna be a waste of time.

Mueller’s office declined to comment on the Manafort complaint. But a Justice Department spokeswoman pushed back in a statement. “The lawsuit is frivolous but the defendant is entitled to file whatever he wants,” the DOJ official said.

It sounds like a man who didn't think of this angle before he made his deal with Mueller.

This could get interesting, especially seeing how high up in the courts it goes.

To expand the scope of the prosecution, it requires approval of the AG. Do we have any evidence Mueller got Rosenstein's approval?

Shouldn’t he be suing the Justice Department or the U.S. Government?
