Your example actually falls in line with OP’s statement that you quoted.

I understand the premise of your statement, OP. But, my view is a little different.

For 25 years, the libs have been systematically lurching more and more leftward. And instead of taking a stand and pushing back the opposite direction, R's have crept more towards the middle, leaving the center much further left than it should be.

Conservatives have been weak and spineless and it has left us with many laws and policies that are much more liberal and socialist than they should be .

I support the equivalent push-back for that reason alone. That said, the abortion argument is not the hill to die on if either party plans to focus on it for 2020.
