I’ve always wondered how this all worked. So do you deal the cards from a deck? Or break open packs for a game? Or bring your own cards from home?
Traditionally each player builds their own deck at home that the cards work together to create a powerful "army". They bring their own deck to the game. You have no idea what your opponent has until the game begins. Different decks do different things.
A draft is where you break open packs and create a deck from what you get taking turns picking a card from the pack. It's a fun style because you don't know what you have until you start drafting and it doesn't work as well as a strategized deck. So it's more chaos and unpredictable.

Is Pokémon also a game like this
Pokemon is very similar, just different cartoonish characters that appeal to younger kids, although adults really get into it too.

or is Pokémon just cards to collect like sports cards?
They are all collectable. Like sports cards, early editions of all these games had limited runs, so the number of available cards is relatively low leading to higher prices. More current editions, like sports cards are printed in such high volume that the cards are not worth as much. The caveat though is that cards that do certain things can become valuable because people that play want to build a deck around said card, so demand will inflate the value even on modern cards based on that card's abilities.

I read a book about Magic TG a few years ago. The needs were really good at math and counting cards. Some dude recruited many of them and was going around cleaning out casinos. Finally they got lifetime bans. Was interesting.

My 8yr old and I are into Football and Baseball card collecting. We go to a local shop that is excellent, however yes, there are some weird fellas there for Pokemon and Magic cards. It’s cool to see a fellow sports card collector, they all seem normal.
