It’s not new.
They’ve been checking scales since I was a kid and I’m in my early 40’s.
They check gas pumps and scanners too.
I asked about the scanners and they said it’s to make sure the prices on the shelves match the prices in the store’s computer. Not sure that requires an inspector though.

How would they treat the people at Sams that use Scan and Go? Do they need to come and check my phone annually and stick a sticker on it to make sure it is compliant?
Now I know the real reason a trial version of Scan and Go where you would grab a scanner at the door and scan and bag your groceries while you shop at my local Walmart ended so fast, they would have gone broke on registration fees for all the handheld scanners they had.
