spending the federal assistance at lingerie shops, tattoo parlors, nail salons and jewelry stores completely ridiculous.

If you ever got out and about in your community instead of being nothing more than an armchair political commando you'd understand that it isn't a small percentage. Unfortunately this legislation doesn't do a whole lot because they can cash out the balance on the EBT card. Asking the public to report fraud on these individuals is basically asking them to snitch on themselves.

Sorry - my math was "decimal" challenged - 20% of 4 million would be 800k. The link I cited may be a couple of years old.

In any event, my 19.3% of Louisiana's population, should have read - 700k to 800k, minimum, not 70k to 80k - so there is no way the low numbers that triggered all this could be counting everything that actually is welfare as "welfare" (again, I would suspect even our TANF numbers are higher than that - after all, like I said, over 20k public housing units, and I do not believe that counts Section 8 recipients).

Wouldn't it be great if welfare recipients (any type - food stamps, housing assistance, etc.) had to undergo surprise audits every year or two.

Do you know how expensive and stupid that would be? Talk about being the opposite of small government.

I'm all for some major changes to most welfare, especially getting people off of it after a while. Just not sure your idea would be all that great from a cost effectiveness point of view.

It's a start, but it's only a temporary band-aid as people can just use an ATM to get the money then spend it on whatever they want. What I really like though is that businesses can be fined for allowing EBT use for these items.

Agreed. We aren't doing nearly enough to stop entitlement abuse.

Or your Yacht on.

(Reuters) - A couple who collected food stamps and other public assistance from Minnesota while living on a yacht in Florida were being sought on fraud charges, prosecutors said on Friday.

Colin Chisholm III and his wife, Andrea Chisholm, accepted more than $165,000 in public assistance between 2005 and 2012 before benefits were terminated, according to prosecutor Mike Freeman in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Charges against Colin Chisholm were filed in February but they were kept sealed while police searched for the couple, Chuck Laszewski, a spokesman for Freeman, said on Friday. "They know by now we are looking for them."

The Chisholms are each charged with a felony count of wrongfully obtaining public assistance in excess of $35,000, the highest threshold under Minnesota law. Andrea Chisholm was charged on Thursday.

They bought a $1.2 million yacht, The Andrea Aras, in 2005 shortly after applying for welfare benefits in Minnesota, according to complaints against them. They have been accused of living on the yacht in the area of Palm Beach, Florida, for 28 months while lying about living in Minnesota.

Colin Chisholm was the chief executive officer of a satellite television and broadband services company, his wife bred and sold championship dogs, and over a seven-year period the couple deposited more than $2.6 million in bank accounts they did not report on applications for welfare benefits, according to the complaint.

They have lived in luxury homes in suburban Minneapolis, driven a $30,000 Lexus and also collected welfare benefits in Florida, the complaint said.

So, while the welfare CADILLAC is a myth, the welfare YACHT is, in fact, real.

[quote] 2008, the number of welfare recipients in Louisiana was 19,845.

I thought 3,500 seemed laughably low.

Link: LINK ]

Instead trying to waste your time bashing poor people you would brush up on your math.

Even though it was a FOX News article it says around 3500 Households. You do understand Households?

According to the state TANF(welfare) is for families of at least 3 who earn under $30,000 annually. They are only elgible for 5 years during their ENTIRE LIFETIME.

At least 3 in the household & I don't know what the average size household on TANF is . 4 ? 5?

So if you add up your every person in every household(some drop off by quarters & are added on) for a certain year I am certain TANF pays out to somewhere around 15000-20000 people per year(although some not the entire year).

The confusion is because people like you in your haste to villainous the poor don't read the numbers you throw out.

True dat - I am all for smaller government and lower cost.

I would say - "let everybody get welfare" - so you don't have any paperwork at all.

All's you got to do is show up once every two weeks at a designated parking lot and wait for a big semi or two to pull in with basic food items;
canned meat,
canned vegetables,
powdered milk,
flour,
rice,
beans,
pork bellies,
ham hocks,
sugar,
etc.

Govt would set up a table and a couple guys would bring out a two week supply of what they got.

You would line up and wait your turn - when you got to the table, you would first have to go thru a skinny door opening to qualify for the free food.

Don't have to be poor, or minority, or disabled, or anything - if you want to spend your time in the line, you get the goods.

problem solved.

The black man who paints the front of our store buildings for $600.oo a store needed to pay his phone bill that day. We could not loan him the money, against corporate rules, so he left to go sell his $300 worth of food stamps[snap] for $100 cash to pay his phone bill. I saw a woman in front of me at Kroger buy $112.00 of meat, pies, cakes, etc. and in the lobby another woman gave her $60 cash for the groceries. That's selling your food stamps purchase for cash at half value. Saw 2 other women buy $300 worth of groceries then take a lot to WM service desk and return a lot for cash, they walked right over with the cash from stamps and bought cigarettes and beer. It's terribly abused and fraudulently used, no one cares. If you said anything, you are a Racist and mean.

This isn't bashing the poor it's calling out people who intentionally abuse the system and steal from hard working tax payers. I have no problem with people based on their income. I have a problem when people leach off of others when they are capable of finding a damn job.

Stop thinking with your bleeding heart and use your brain.

Article was way off. Sorry you believed it. Someone got their numbers messed up.

I am certain the article is more correct than you can seem to comprehend.

It didn't count every recipient to make the numbers seem more daunting like you & others like to use to villainize poor families. It says Households not each individual person who is on the program any given year.

In order to receive that whopping $192 per family you must have a family of at least 3 or more & earn less than $30,000 to get the 5 years of LIFETIME benefits.

The article is correct (on average) & if you count every family that moved on or off the program during the year it's probably varies from quarter to quarter ,but still only a few thousand (way less than 900k or even 19,000k that has been claimed)

I knew the knuckleheads would come running with EBT since the photo has an EBT card. You can not use Food stamps(EBT) to buy lingerie , clothes,etc...anyway (unless you barter).

Welfare(TANF ) is a small CASH supplement of $192 per household(not individual).

I was going by what you said. What you said was:

quote:

An entire 3500 households who receive welfare in Louisiana (according to the article) at $192 per month.
You said 3,500 households receive welfare in Louisiana. Because of how you worded it, I was under the impression you were talking about welfare as a whole and not a very specific program.

But the overall point is still the same. $3 billion is being spent on welfare in Louisiana. Fraud and waste should be cut wherever applicable.

The article probably left out some seriously qualifying information, or was horribly wrong. Maybe they meant FITAP. Either way, it's wrong.

Welfare isn't limited to TANF. The article (and you) were wrong.

The problem with this is that this is how it should have been in the first place. Just throwing money at a problem with no thought at all.
