Here is a video of our good friend spinning how great the consumer has it now, despite higher gas prices.

Kevin Hassett: "The consumer is really, really firing on all cylinders…Credit card spending is through the roof. They're spending more on gasoline, but they're spending more on everything else too."

Gas prices adjusted for inflation are nearly identical to the average price of gas between 2001 and 2026.

This is not as smart as you think it is…

Kevin is that you?

The average price of gasoline in 1979, adjusted for inflation to 2026 dollars, is approximately $8.27 per gallon.
1979 is when those mullahs took Iran over and Carter laid down in a fetal position while sucking his thumb.

... I agree ...
if you are not hooked on going out to eat every night , driving your car at the drop of a hat , and spend more time at home with family and friends you are living large right now.
Beef is back on the shelves
They are giving away eggs and flour down here in New Orleans.
Now that the Jazz Fest is over --- free festivals
Hop on the streetcar to get around
Chicken at an all time low
Went to Rouses this morning and picked up a pack of chicken drumsticks @89 cents that were so big even the cashier was amazed ...
What a time to be alive ...

Sure, consumers have so much money in their pockets, that's why they are running up the credit card debt? Is that something we applaud in this admin--go into debt to pay for gas?

I see this response a lot from the ppl on the right. Every time I wonder, how did the left end up with the false idea that they are the party of the elite and wealthy, when this is the common sentiment, along with good old trickle-down economics, from the right?

You think this is a new development?

Ah, so you aren’t here to debate. You are here to fling ghetto poop.

So you think we are headed for another once-in-a-lifetime crash, and you are okay with the powers that be trying to tell us everything is fine? I can't think of any other reason you would point to 2008 as a good data point for your argument.

I'm here to understand why we accept hypocrisy and lies just because it's our team telling them.

While this is true, and the economy may be statistically doing well, there are myriad reasons for it.
People are struggling with cost of living though. There's zero doubt. But a big part of that is how people expect to be able to afford certain things when they monetarily cannot (consumer culture/keeping up appearances).
I'm sorry but you don't need a brand new 75,000 vehicle when you just paid yours off after finishing a 72-month note. You don't need the latest $3,000 cell phone when you can get a cheap Android for $100. You don't need $300 worth of BS television channels from your internet or cable provider. You don't need designer fashion, period.
If more people would lower their expectations and "standards", a reset process would occur organically.
