New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is proposing giving New Yorkers a one-time payment to help deal with inflation.

The direct payment to residents is the first proposal in her 2025 State of the State address, which she will deliver on Jan. 14.

Under Hochul's plan, New Yorkers would begin receiving the checks in the fall. The state will pay for the initiative using excess sales-tax revenue Hochul said.

Families making as much as $300,000 will get $500 while individuals earning $150,000 or less will receive $300, Hochul said.

"Because of inflation, New York has generated unprecedented revenues through the sales tax — now, we're returning that cash back to middle class families," Hochul said in a statement. "My agenda for the coming year will be laser-focused on putting money back in your pockets."

What a joke.

Nothing like fighting inflation with something that is guaranteed to cause more inflation.

To quote one of my favorite songs: "Fighting fire with unlit matches"

Does she truly not understand how economics works? Or is this just another cynical vote buying scheme, consequences be damned?

Don't get me wrong, I am always in favor of taxpayers getting their money back, but something tells me that's not what's truly at play here.

How is returning money back to people guaranteed to cause more inflation?

If that were the case, inflation would skyrocket yearly during income tax season.

NY isn't printing new money.

I tried to edit my posts for clarity, but I'm thinking I misunderstood the OP and didn't read the linked article. My mistake.

If they are truly getting their own money back, that's definitely not going to cause inflation.

Handing out free money will certainly help combat inflation.

It's a return of state collected sales tax.

How will that cause inflation?

They can't be this stupid, can they?

Pretending they are economically illiterate must be part of their grand scheme?

Well where was that tax revenue going to go initially? Will New York now ask the federal government for assistance to help make up the difference? If taxes were meant to go directly back to the people who pay them, they wouldn't be taxes. It's got to be made up somewhere and knowing democrat politicians, the state will eventually ask the feds to help out because they're just in such a bad financial state (see what California tried). Eventually, it'll factor into inflationary prices one way or another.
