Is that true? I never understood how Roberts was given the Chief Justice title just because he was replacing the previous one. Figured it would be given to the most senior or most respected justice.

I don’t think it works that way. The President nominates the Chief Justice, but he keeps that tithe until he dies or steps down. The President can’t fire him and give the title to another justice unless there is a vacancy.

You’re really off the mark here and it’s a disappointment to our educational system that you don’t know the Chief Justice needs to be appointed by the President then confirmed by the Senate.
Also the other factor you are wrong about, a Justice’s appointment may be made only when there is, or is scheduled to be, a vacancy in the position of Chief Justice; the President may not use the occasion of an Associate Justice vacancy to appoint someone to replace a sitting Chief Justice.
Open a book, it’s the age of information and you’re still vastly misinformed or just flat out spewing bullshite.

It's at the discretion of the POTUS (Roberts was originally nominated to replace Sandra O'Connor until William Rehnquist died).
