What complicates this is that the deadline is Jan 15, Landry isn’t governor until Jan 8th. A special session must have a weeks notice. It would likely take 3-5 days to pass a map. Unless an extension is granted Landry doesn’t have the time

I'm sure everyone involved already has a handful of proposals

Creating a district based on race sounds illegal. Race should not be a determining factor in anything.

It has already been adjudicated in 1986.
Read Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and then Thornburg v. Gingles where a unanimous decision of the Rehnquist court set out the 3 part criteria for the constitutionality of majority-minority districts.

There’s the respect for the separation of powers I’ve come to expect on this board.
In the end the court would draw the map. So telling them to pound sand wouldn’t be a great idea

Why is it that just blacks get a distinct? What about the Asians? Do they not deserve representation? The American Indians could probably benefit from a district of their own. The gerrymandering that is supposed to be a fix for racism is racist at it’s very core.
If other minority groups have high enough population and density and meet the 3 requirements of Thornburg v. Gingles and current districting violates the Voting Rights Act then any minority should have a majority-minority district.
There are indeed Asian-American and Hispanic/Latino majority-minority districts. It isn't just blacks.

How about 30% of the districts for 33% of the population?

2020 census has blacks at 12.7%. Do we not use the census as the test for congressional reps?

So you believe a federal court demanding a state provide more representation than what the actual 2020 census population demographics is not an infrindgement on the separation of powers?

No, you suggested the la legis should tell the courts to pound sand. Disregarding a ruling on a federal court of appeals would in fact be disregarding the separation of powers. Do you suggest the Alabama legislature ignore the ruling of the Supreme Court of the US in their case?

That # is for "black alone." If you throw in mixed race (ie, black and any combination) you get 33.1%.
Scroll down and you can choose that.
And if we are being honest, that's the appropriate measure.
