They were old enough to know the good music of traditional country such as George Strait.
George Strait is a great performer but he doesn’t write his own music. Isbell isn’t as good a singer (better guitar player) but he writes his own tunes. Completely different strengths and very weird to compare

He cancelled his show here in KC this week without any reason given

Meh, him being from the south and his original fan base being primarily southern means he will take much heat.
nah. he's good but he gets extra shelf life from the media for being a liberal singer/songwriter. he's been this way for over a decade.
it could be that the south probably will still consume your product because it's good and not assign politics to everything.

No doubt a Neanderthal geezer boomer will disagree

Longer than that. When he was with the Truckers their politics were lefty. It just wasn’t as apparent because most of their songs were about being broke and outsiders, but anytime Hood, Cooley, or Isbell referenced politics they came at it from the left.

You think that is traditional country?

Used to be a big fan of Drive By Truckers & Isbell back in the day. I can't separate entertainers idiocy from their art. I have dropped my fandom from countless music, sports, actors etc over past 18 mos. Life is better when you stop taking an interest in people that hate you. It's been great getting back to my roots taking my sons hunting & fishing like my dad did with me. Ain't gonna lie. It's hard to get my wife & kids to come along sometimes. I don't make them but at the same time I literally don't watch TV with them. All TV does is piss me off. Life's too short.

He has 2 good songs and one was done better by Zac Brown and the other done better by Morgan Wallen.

Oh, you know absolutely nothing about Isbell’s music if you think he is country
I’d say he’s country adjacent with plenty of songs that could be called straight up country like: outfit, codiene, dress blues, something more than free, elephant, if it takes a lifetime, etc. actually his song never gonna change with the truckers has some rock energy to it, but if it had dumber lyrics it could easily have passed for a Montgomery gentry tune

The Truckers, which is probably a shock to their past and current fans were certainly on the left of the political spectrum.
The PT board doesn’t know that Johnny Cash was a lefty.

Have lived more life than you ever will, Che.
You're too soft to live, and too stupid to survive on your own.

I feel like I just told you Santa Claus wasn’t real.
Just keep railing her full speed for 2 minutes. The moans are probably real.

I would say Americana/singer song writer. Certainly not anything that would get any real country radio air play.

#notallfans the truckers were my favorite group from the 2000s by a wide margin. I realized their politics weren’t mine but they could somehow be the closest contemporary thing to Merle haggard and lynyrd skynyrd at the same time

Fair enough. I think of him as Americana but also think alt-country music in general falls under that umbrella. I won’t argue that he won’t get on most country radio stations, but I also don’t think a lot of what is on those stations is real country either. I stand pretty firmly with Alan Jackson about the murder committed on music row
