I’ve been thinking about 20th Century genocides lately

The 20th century saw some of the most horrific genocides in human history: Nazi Germany, Pol Pot in Cambodia, the Japanese slaughtering the Chinese in Nanking, the purges in China under Mao, the purges in USSR under Stalin, the Ottoman ethnic cleansing of Armenians, the Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda, Uganda under Idi Amin, and so on.
It’s a testament to the stability of life in America that most of us grew up enjoying that I never understood how one group of people could hate another group of people living in their country so much that they would simply murder them en masse rather than trying to work with them to resolve the issues.
For the first time in my life, I understand genocide on a gut level.

We are approaching Yugoslav Wars level of hatred between groups.
When that shite goes bad, it isn’t pretty.

I still don't. It requires a level of tribalism I just can't grasp. I also think they're in large part pretty ineffective at achieving end goals.
I can, however, begin to understand some of the brutality that accompanies revolutions and counterrevolutions. The idea that you need to break the back of the entity being opposed, sometimes in horrific fashion, to discredit the enemy and be able to seek a more peaceful path forward.

The 1900s were incredibly bloody. It’s actually actually amazing such things happened in such a short time ago and today we would be appalled at anything remotely close

Yeah, like Darfur or China sending Uighurs to camps wasn’t in the past 20 years.

Some of this is human nature
Pretending it's not latent in the minds of humans because those who did these things were from 50 or 100 years ago is silly
Glorifying it is a different matter, but I don't think that's OP's point. If anything, openly discussing how people get to the brink and what can be done to deviate from that end result is a healthy thing for a culture/society.

The interesting thing is that 'war' and 'genocide' have two different motives. Historically, war is about resources...'I want your stuff and I'm gonna take it.'
Genocide is...'Life would be better if you people didn't exist.'
War is very common in history. Genocide is not.

Everyone knows everything going on instantly now. Back then, people didn't GAF. Things like the Armenian genocide and Stalin's purges would get a blurb on page 8 of the newspaper. People were more concerned about the local harvest or the upcoming weekend social.
