Snopes.com originated as the website to validate outrageous internet rumors. To which, 25 years ago it was email rumors that would spread like wildfire, before the likes of Twitter/Facebook/Instagram. For example, a message about kids getting bit by baby rattlesnakes that lived in the ball pit of playground areas at fast food restaurants made the rounds, all the ladies at work were hysterical, terrified at this atrocity. But it never actually happened. It was just a made up story, like razor blades in Halloween candy. Snopes dedicated itself to verifying this. Unfortunately everything over the last 5-10 years has become politicized so the truth takes a backseat to perception. Naturally people who work for snopes can't check their bias at the door so you see less objective fact finding missions.
