We could have just looped them in instead of causing issues for them, demanding they jump in to help, and then constantly drag them in the media.

Except none of this happened.

You're really going all in on this stupid fricking hypothetical thing today aren't you?

What?

We didn’t involve them in planning or cooperate/inform Europe ahead of time.

We immediately started acting like they should be pitching in to police the Strait.

We thereafter attacked them publicly at every possible turn when they declined to wade into our mess.

Which of those things didn’t happen?

I wonder if we're flying around with some tactical nukes or something and word got out.

I wouldn't want that shite near my airspace either. Take the long way around.

B-52 Stratofortress: Approximately 46 B-52H bombers are rated for nuclear missions, specifically carrying air-launched cruise missiles (ALCMs) with W80-1 warheads, and in the future, the Long-Range Standoff (LRSO) missile.

B-2 Spirit: All 20 operational B-2 stealth bombers are capable of carrying B61-7/11/12 and B83 nuclear gravity bombs.

Italy denies use of Sicily airbase to US planes carrying weapons for Iran war
quote:

use of the base had been denied because the US sought authorisation to land only while the aircraft were already en route to Sicily. The source said this meant there was not enough time to seek approval in parliament, as is required for aircraft landing on naval bases with weapons.

According to treaties established in the late 1950s, the US navy bases can be used for logistical and training purposes but not as transit hubs for aircraft used to transport weapons for war unless in an emergency situation.

quote:

Specific reporting from March 31, 2026, cites the bilateral treaties governing the use of U.S. military installations in Italy as the legal basis for these transparency requirements.
The Straits Times

The primary sources for this operational "briefing" requirement include:

2006 Technical Arrangement (TA): This agreement on Defense Installations/Infrastructure explicitly states that movements and transfers of "hazardous materiel" (including weapons and explosives) "shall be coordinated with the Italian Commander in order to verify its conformity to Italian legislation".

1995 Memorandum of Understanding (The "Shell" Agreement): This document outlines the fundamental sovereignty of Italy over U.S.-used bases like Sigonella, requiring mutual agreement on activities that go beyond routine logistics and training.

Recent Legal Precedent (March 2026): As reported by Corriere della Sera and Reuters, Italy recently blocked U.S. bombers because the flight plans were submitted without "authorization or consultation with national authorities". Italian military leadership determined these flights were for combat, not "routine logistics," which triggered a mandatory requirement for parliamentary oversight and a detailed declaration of intent.
U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Italy (.gov)

In practice, this means the Italian Defense Ministry must be informed if an aircraft is carrying specific classes of weapons (like strategic vs. tactical) to ensure the mission doesn't violate Italian laws prohibiting the use of its soil for certain types of external conflicts.

idiocy is expecting foreign countries to let us land in their territory with whatever the frick we want on board... whenever we want.

Someone here suggested we move our European troops to Poland, Czechia, Hungary, and Romania

Well Putin would get slightly mad with this.

Although, we could just point our missiles to the west, as western Europe is a larger global threat than Russia.

Our values align better with former Warsaw pact than NATO. Did not have that on bingo card for 21st century
