I was interested in this statement so I ran some numbers.
In 1986 there were 70,300 atomic bombs on earth. There are a lot less now (~14K), but let's use the most.
There is no way to know the kt on each of those bombs, but I think a good middle number like 475 kt is a good pick. Each bomb would make a 1 psi explosion for 289 square miles.
So that's about 20.2 million square miles. If you take off the light blast damage the number is cut in half.
Earth Land mass is about 57 million square miles, but only 25 million is habitable.
We would obviously be super effed if this were to happen, but I'm not sure we ever could have destroyed the entire planet. Fallout is a different calc, but you trade immediate death for slow death for the same amount of people.
