In a lab you can prove a mask reduces spray from a sneeze or cough.

However, the real world is not a lab.

An ignorant population running around with improperly worn, improperly fitted masks made from the wrong materials and as a bonus, not sanitized properly or stored properly does absolutely nothing to stop, slow or prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

A better case can be made that they are a filthy hazard and the overemphasis on masks comes at the expense of hand washing and not touching your face. 2 things that are well established defenses against virus and bacteria.

Even though most ORs look like this - there are still plenty of patients who contract staph infections

Look... If I'm wearing a pair of jeans, and take a piss, then you don't get piss all over you, right?

What more proof do you need?

In case you do need more proof...

Go breathe on a mirror. What happens?

Now put a mask one and breathe on the mirror. What happens then?

If that isn't proof enough for you, I don't know what is.

No, the opposite. They don't work.

CDC Study

Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.

The only scientifically proven activity that is immune to this virus is violently protesting and burning down buildings

Is there scientific proof that it even slows the spread?
Is there scientific proof that red-lights even slow the spread of traffic fatalities? After all, how many fatalities result from folks running red lights?

Is there scientific proof that policemen even slow the spread of homicides? After all, how many fatalities result from police themselves?

Is there any scientific proof that surgical masks even slow the the spread infections? After all, how many fatalities result from surgical infections?

Is there any scientific proof that looking both ways before crossing the road slows the the spread pedestrian-MV injuries?

Why is it anyone’s concern if I want to limit my germ spread by wearing a mask?

Nobody cares about you wearing a mask. Just don't be a bitch about people choosing not to. It's really that simple.

Against the Wuhan virus?

Absolutely...when used in conjunction with social distancing and proper sanitation. Masks alone? Absolutely not...and therein lies the rub.

Initially we were told masks weren't needed because in reality there was going to be mass shortage and health care workers HAD to have them for all of their work, not just COVID. The rest of us were simply not necessary.

Then we started talking about social distancing....shutting down....but there was no way to do this without some reassurance that people's income would remain at a level that allowed them to make their nut. Trump and company alleviated this pressure and we shut down.

That is not sustainable...so we are now in the process of weaning ourselves of that reassurance....and part of the "feel good" process of going back to normal is that masks make a difference, now that they are readily available. That is ALL the mask craze is about....getting as close to business as usual while making the public think they are safe to do so....with ZERO science suggesting that masks make a tinkers damn of difference without social distancing, which is not in any manner sustainable.

Here in Washington State this is abundantly clear. The authorities have placed electric signs, those used to redirect traffic where a message can be displayed on the sign. The message on those signs? "Want to move to stage 2? WEAR YOUR MASK!" The result? People are out and about, with masks on, eating at patio restaurants and bars....and the virus is on an uptick and will only get worse when people go back to their office and schools, with masks on, because the only thing a mask does in the absence of social distancing, which is not sustainable, is give us a false sense of security, on par with rushing out to buy toilet paper. It gives us the sense that we are doing something that is sustainable and might make a difference when the science is clear....in the absence of unsustainable levels of social distancing masks make no difference.

Those surgical masks are used to reduce BACTERIAL infections. Bacteria are giants compared to viruses.

Yea, I hadn’t read the article since it came out, and it looks like the authors have realized their evils and are capitulating to the moral mobs.

It’s hilarious that you think you’re the intelligent one in this thread.

The answer to all of those questions, except #3, is yes. If not scientific proof, then at least actual data and real world examples.

And as for your picture earlier in the thread, surgeons are also wearing hairnets, gloves, and gowns. Why are those things also being mandated to stop the spread of covid?

Very poor analogy. Get a cigar, light it, take a good drag and hold the smoke. Put on mask. Exhale. There you go. Smoke eerywhere!

Do the same thing except this time cough instead of exhaling. There you go. Smoke eerywhere!

Put on a mask and a pair of glasses. Exhale in a humid environment. There you go...fogged glasses....

Wearing a mask does nothing in the absence of social distancing...there is no study anywhere that states otherwise...and wearing masks discourages social distancing...the evidence is abundant. Social distancing is the only thing that can make a difference and it is not sustainable on any level that would make a difference. We will have to eventually face these cold hard truths and accept the fallout.
