"Sex" is the word you're looking for here.
If you use the word "gender" for pretty much anything not related to grammar, you're falling into the post-modernists' trap.
For example, people talk about "gender reveal" parties when, by their own definitions, you can't determine the "gender" of a fetus. But you can determine its sex.
Society is letting the post-modernists define the terms for us. Don't fall for it.

I really feel it is a very interesting question. Has a human being with downs ever shot up a school or wrecked a real woman's athletic career? I have looked real hard and can not find any news related to criminality or disgust regarding humans with downs.
