He had to drop out of the Presidential race in the 1980s because he was caught lying on a massive scale. He didn’t have dementia back then.
So, the dementia isn’t creating his lies. He’s always been a pathological liar. He just has dementia on top of it now.

He's been arrogant long enough and stupid long enough that whatever condition his mind is in, he could be a compulsive liar but also conditioned to believe whatever he says. As most people with dementia seem to function, they know what they know even if to everyone around them they're wrong.

Seems like he could have come under a stolen valor charge,highly disrespectful to those that actually went.
