The Israelis blew up a depot in Baghdad last week that belonged to an Iranian backed militia.

These militias emerged during the fight against Isis and the were eventually recognized by the state.

Iraq has now responded to the strike, shutting down airspace for everyone.

This is a good example of short sighted Israeli thinking. They blew up (1) depot, but in turn, they lost access to Iraqi airspace. Iraq will likely invest in a serious air defense system, likely the S-300, and any future strikes will be much more difficult. This also pushes Baghdad and Tehran closer, and it jeopardizes our deployment in Iraq.

It’s a tactical victory, but a strategic loss.

This episode also reveals a lot about Israeli thinking. They conducted the raid, knowing that we would pay a price.

Do you honesty think you know better than one of the most dedicated, well-trained, knowledgeable, resourceful, and dangerous militaries on Earth?

People do this in politics too. Criticize one decision because they believe they know better than a person who has access to mindblowing amounts of intel

They were using coalition aircraft as cover.

That will be much more difficult if not impossible to do now.

Iraq doesn’t have the hardware they need to defend their airspace. They purchased 48 Pantsirs, the last of which were delivered in 2018, but those are a short range point defense system.

The Iraqi threat of closing their airspace means nothing

If Israel and the U.S. wanted to flyover Iraq, and conduct operations, Iraq is not stopping anyone.

The Israelis acted selfishly and stupidly.

It’s a meaningless tactical victory that will result in serious negative repercussions for them.

They will acquire the means to do it.

And there are plenty of people in Iraq who would be happy to shoot down an allied aircraft.

It’s a good example of someone’s short sighted thinking, certainly. How much closer do you think Baghdad and Tehran can get, if they are sanctioning another country for blowing up a depot owned by an Iranian backed militia?

Israel hasn’t really lost access to anything, so really all that has happened is elements within the Iraqi government which supports Iranian influence in the country have been exposed.

The IAF is professional, but the IDF is badly trained, not at all that well motivated, and fundamentally undisciplined.

The Israeli leadership is generally short sighted.

Nothing was “exposed” these militia have been operating with Tehran’s open and visible support for years.

Iraqis foremost concern is that this makes Iraq look weak, because they could not detect or stop the attack.

What will likely happen, is Iraq will buy some flavor of the S-300, either from Iran or Russia. And if Israel is really unlucky, they’ll share their radar data with Iran.

We should get the hell out of the Middle East TODAY.

The MIC screams for more money all the time and Trump like his former nemesis McCain seems willing to throw at them by the ship load.

Get us out--bring home our boys and tell the MIC to make do with what they have now that they have less responsibility.

What’s the logic? It’s good to have access to the airspace, so long as you don’t use it?

Isn’t this the same way the cucks look at taking a stand, they don’t like to, because it might jeopardize a future election?

Future value.

What’s the future value vs a tactical victory.
