But the broad pattern has become clearer: Beginning around the turn of the 21st century, many of the most economically advanced nations began experiencing some kind of decline in IQ. Your DNA is the next big privacy battleground MAY 22, 201802:40 One potential explanation was quasi-eugenic. As in the movie “Idiocracy,” it was suggested that average intelligence is being pulled down because lower-IQ families are having more children ("dysgenic fertility" is the technical term). Alternatively, widening immigration might be bringing less-intelligent newcomers to societies with otherwise higher IQs. However, a 2018 study of Norway has punctured these theories by showing that IQs are dropping not just across societies but within families. In other words, the issue is not that educated Norwegians are increasingly outnumbered by lower-IQ immigrants or the children of less-educated citizens. Even children born to high-IQ parents are slipping down the IQ ladder.

Poorly written article, but interesting concept. They take care to point out what this is NOT (or seems not to be). Funny but immigration didn't enter my mind as a possibility. I'm not racist like that.

I don't understand. Explain this to me in emojis, and try not to take longer than my 15 second attention span.

I was going to say I did a control-F for climate and got nothing. I was looking for it.

You think that has something with people from undeveloped nations "migrating" into the developed ones?

Poor people need to keep their legs closed. If you can’t support yourself, stop fricking like rabbits and then passing the burden on to those who were responsible and waited for the right time to have children

You didn't even read the bit I quoted. Or my comments.

This isn't even hard to explain and was totally predictable.

When you subsidize failure, you get more failure.

Did they survey NBC viewers? If so, the result is probably correct.

You could be more direct about it: When you subsidize stupidity, you get more stupidity.

Failure relates to effort. Here we're just talking about raw intelligence.

So this is one of their counterarguments for open borders.

I'd be interested in knowing magnitude. IE, is the "within families" reduction on par with the overall societal reduction?

Alas, even the within families part is explainable.

IQ is almost certainly correlated to the degree of challenge life presents the brain. Obviously not singularly correlated. But, I suspect that all other things being equal, the brain on the easy life develops more poorly than one that is challenged

The article explains that those conducting the studies controlled for that by looking at IQ scores within families and still found them to be dropping.

Yes.

But, the point remains. A high level of social failure is related to a lack of ability. It used to be that this lack of ability was biologically punished to a fairly high degree.

In more developed nations, it is punished FAR less and, frankly, is subsidized at this point.

Let's be blunt. 300 years ago, a huge chunk of idiots with 10 kids would just be idiots with 7 children who starved to death.

Could it be because we’re taking in millions of immigrants from low IQ countries?

And the fact that our own low IQ folks are rewarded for having children?

Maybe if you are surrounded by dumber people, you become dumber too.

I think you're dead on. The article alludes to this.

It just speaks more to globalization leading to protracted pain. In the long, long run, everything is better. But all sides struggle while it all shakes out, and there are victims all over.

Some people profit, though. You can see how easy it is to be for globalization if you are privileged to take advantage of it in the short term.
