Just read that he was a former NRA instructor. In a manner of speaking, the NRA helped stop the bad guy.

quote:

Stephen Willeford shot and chased the man who killed 26 people in a Texas church on Sunday. He spoke to 40/29 News in an exclusive sit-down interview on Monday.

Willeford was at home when his daughter came into his bedroom to tell him she heard gunshots at the First Baptist Church nearby.

Willeford, a former NRA instructor, got his rifle out of his safe while his daughter looked outside again. She ran back in and told him she saw a man in black tactical gear shooting up the church.

Thanks for posting this. I'd really like to understand the reasoning behind the downvotes.

It is well worth listening to the long interview. This guy epitomizes what makes a "reluctant hero".

How long before this hero is deemed a murderer by the left on the basis his life was not in danger from the gunman therefore he had no legal right to be shooting at the guy in black? Surprised it already hasn't come up in discussions.

I saw in a news blurb in our paper this morning that some guy in Mandeville was arresting on gun charges because he found teen-age kids rolling his neighbors houses, he blocked their exit and held them at bay with a gun in waiting for the cops. He got arrested, article didn't say if the toilet paper brigade was arrested or not.

Why is the story that the church shooter killed himself when Willieford says nothing about a gunshot when the SUV stopped?

I tell my wife this all the time, there are three kinds of people: those that watch, those that run away, and those that run in. We all WANT to be the guy that runs in, but not everyone can do it. Thank God there are those that can.

Let's hope that most of us never have to find out.

A freaking AR battle inside 20 yds is insane. I can't even imagine what was going through his mind. The only thing this guy did wrong was not have his mags pre-loaded. He had the deck stacked against him; one partial mag, barefoot, thrust into the thick of battle, geez... I'm glad the good guy with training came out ahead here.

when he says that he was filled with the Holy Spirit I believe him.

I realize it may be strange to nonbelievers why God would allow something like this to happen and why prayer would seem strange. The Bible has never promised peace and prosperity to Christians in fact The Church has spread the most during times of persecution and violence against it.

Summary that I got from the interview
- he's sitting in a chair relaxing when his daughter hears and recognizes gunshots which he dismisses initially as something tapping on the glass
- gets up, moves to front of house and recognizes the sound as actual gun fire. immediately goes to the safe to retrieve his weapon and ammo
- daughter apparently gets out and drives around the church and comes back and says there is a shooter.
- he calls his wife/other daughter who are 5 miles down the road working on a house & says 'stay put'
- gives his other daughter busy work to keep her out of the line of fire
- walks outside barefoot (still loading his mag i think) and approaches shooter's vehicle because he says every time he hears a shot 'thats a bullet finding its target'
- sees kevlar-clad shooter moving towards his running truck, shooter pulls out a pistol and begins firing at him.
- he returns fire, notices weakness where kevlar velcro attach on the sides and hits a bullseye
- shooter takes off in vehicle
- he checks his weapon, has ONLY TWO BULLETS LEFT a chambered round & one left in the mag, flags down truck
- pursues killer, stays on phone with police until the guy bleeds out & runs off the road
- gets out, trains rifle on driver's side window and waits for cops
- cops arrive and say over bullhorn 'put down your weapon'. he puts it down and the cop says 'no, not you'
- retrieves rifle and keeps it trained on truck (along with police) until enough units arrive and cop shields him with vehicle until he is out of harm's way

i have to say i probably wouldn't do about 90% of those same things correctly. this guy didn't make a mistake.

to add to the sad story, he was growing a santa beard because he is getting ready to donate his time to bring toys & food to the less fortunate in his community.

remind me what the TRAINED SECURITY GUARD IN VEGAS DID AGAIN?

HE'S A PLUMBER

Just listened again... Wow....To run towards gunfire and the great unknown, while loading a mag with loose rds, is ballsy and has to be unbelievably frightening at the same time. THis guy must have ice running through his veins. Remember, he also didn't know if there would be more than one shooter, if there was a lookout etc. Of course, he could of just been betting on one and praying not to be wrong. I also would have shite my pants if I pulled out my mag and realized I only had two rds left to protect myself, not to mention his eotech battery still had some power. Ugh... We all would like to believe we would behave similarly but one never knows until they are faced with that decision.

We need more men like Stephen Willeford and less like Toddy, A Want, mccgrath, AggieDub, etc.

Geez. Seems a bit excessive for rolling a house.

I’ve been reluctant to bring this up because the guy is such a hero and a bad arse. I can’t understand why he didn’t have at least one loaded mag.

The only thing I can think of is maybe he had other prepared weapons for home defense and his AR was for fun at the range so he didn’t keep it ready to go.
