You’re saying private entities should not be allowed to exercise their freedom of association?

I got into an argument today with a liberal who I respect. I told him how disappointed I was to see he wasn’t defending free speech. I told him that I would certainly defend a left-leaning equivalent to Alex Jones that was being silenced.

He said he has no issue with this because it’s “not the government doing the censoring”. That’s a cop out IMO. That may be legally justifiable but it’s certainly not morally justifiable for a “liberal” to celebrate this coordinated attack by left-leaning corporations - especially since they are serving in a “public forum” capacity. He didn’t really answer me on that point, which disappointed me.

Insert Voltaire quote here.

Conservatives championed corporatism for decades, now you’re seeing the downside of it. Delicious irony.

You wanted corporations to be people, well now those people are exercising their own 1A rights to not associate with Charleston conspiracy theorist peddlers.

You made your bed, now lie in it.

Several problems with this argument - YT and FB serve in a public forum capacity. Also, even most liberals will admit that they do not apply their standards fairly between political views.

For those reasons I say your comparison to bakers is Apples and oranges.

Do you really want to go down a road where teams one up each other on "getting fricked?"

Then it needs to be consistent from both sides. Only the government shouldn't be able to discriminate. Private sector should be allowed to all day long - including FB/Bird place/Youtube.

Why do they have to be consistent?

I have a question about this. I know FB and YouTube have the ability to sensor whatever they want to label it.

Although "political ideology" is not a protected class, the city of Seattle does recognize it as a protected class. Could a resident of Seattle file a lawsuit against either company for claiming to silence Info Wars based on political ideology and thus denying that person to Info Wars content?

2 options here

I'm for letting the latter play out, some of y'all seem to want government involvement, which to me, is scarier

I don't see anyone wanting the government to do something about it. I think people are just worried about future implications on how big powerful social media and tech companies can silence someone because they consider what they are saying as "hate speech."

They'd have more of a case if they just said that he's spreading false information, like with mis-identifying the parkland shooter.

Do you agree with the legal fiction that corporations are people?
