You are remembering after Reagan was elected. When Carter was in office the news outlets were very critical of Carter and of Mondale when Reagan ran for his second term. Add to that SNL mocked Carter almost every episode. Now compare that to how the news outlets cover for Democrats all of the time and SNL only mocks Republicans. So yeah, news outlets were a lot less biased back then
