Could be. Ya have fricking Democrats promising to devote countless resources to imprisoning Elon and the doge team. Ya have the MSM publicly crucifying Elon and his companies. There was zero chance all that goes away if he ended his time in the white house on good terms. The more trump attacks Elon, and the more Elon attacks trump, the greater the chance Democrats and MSM stop their momentum against Elon and his companies.
Not sure if they thought that far ahead. This may just be a petty dispute between two arrogant individuals. We'll never know.

After this public “spat” everyone instantly is good with him again because of their hate for Trump. He can go back to running billion dollar business and not take market hits due to media attacks.
