It's more like China is a geopolitical enemy and fighting for Taiwan gives us a reason to harm China in ways we wouldn't otherwise be able.

I'm not saying we should "step in" whatever that means, but it is very much in America's interest for Taiwan to remain free and independent.

People severely underestimate how well Taiwan would do in this conflict. It may be the most well defended place on Earth. The coastline is nearly all shallow or high cliffs. Taiwan is self sufficient and stockpiled, so they would scuttle their own ports. China has a limited amphibious fleet, but would need an invasion force that dwarfs Overlord. Taiwan has some of the best anti ship and anti aircraft weapons which would decimate China's relatively small navy.
