It should bother all of us that Trump is so cavalier with giving away taxpayer money like it’s his own personal piggy bank.

Trump is buying votes, like a Democrat.

This sets a bad precedent for if/when the Democrats regain power. They will say "why are you against us buying votes. Trump did it repeatedly."

Big name economists think Keynesian economics makes sense. They are stupid people.

My question is why is every military member getting 1776 dollars? I'm all for spot bonuses for above and beyond actions, but why every single one when we are so far in debt?

Why?

Because the Obama administration ushered in DEI policy and couple that with purposeful massive firings of really good people due to fake covid bullshite and we are at a spot where we must incentivize good warriors and leaders to come back to the military that betrayed them.

That’s the why.

Not those on the right. Most/all are Hayekian.

Find me a Hayekian economist who says tariffs are not a tax.

I will save you the time. The answer is "zero".

Not an economist. He was a fund manager.

Here is Stephen Moore. An actual economist and one of the authors of Trump's 2017 tax cut. Read what he has to say on this issue.

At this point Trump has promised to use that money to give it to active military members, use it to replace income tax, give all taxpayers a $2,000 refund, use it to pay down the debt, use it to fund tax cuts, use it to bail out farmers who are suffering due to the tariffs he imposed on China, and he's mentioned using it to offset the cost of childcare and has actually used some to float WIC during the government shutdown.

If you don't see what he's doing here, I don't know what to tell you.

One or two of those smaller expenditures might happen.

Other than that, he's just enjoying the fact that y'all will believe anything he says.

("I could shoot someone in the face on 5th Avenue and my approval ratings would go up.")

Nah. They'll do it regardless and say anything they can think of regardless.

I do think populists are idiots when it comes to setting precedents that are going to come back and bite them in the buttocks, but this one doesn't concern me.

Trump is buying votes like a populist. You associate it with Democrats b/c Democrats have been populists for a lot longer than Republicans, but that's the defining characteristic.

What's amazing to me is that people on this thread think he's really going to do it. That he can take Around $230 Billion dollars in tariff revenue and fulfill five Trillion dollars worth of promises with it.

Tariffs are a fee, not a tax. Taxes are on goods. Tariffs are paid to allow someone to import their goods. That is a service.

When you pay with a credit card and you are charged extra for processing, that is a fee not a tax. You pay the fee for the service of processing your payment. You pay taxes on the goods you purchased.

It's a very clear distinction.
