re: If the gas and food costs keep rising, why shouldn't minimum wage do so as well?

Fast food workers don't make min wage. No one makes min wage unless they are retirees and high schoolers

I just asked a controversial question. I'm not saying I'm in support of it.

What % of people making minimum wage, receive food stamps and/or WIC? I think that question need to be answered before lobbying for a minimum wage increase.

Because price controls don't work.

Raising minimum wage increases inflation and devalues the dollar. Which hurt the people that actually save money. If you want more money, then you should learn a skill to make you more irreplaceable.

Right. Is someone better off making $8.00 an hour plus housing, food, day care, earned income credit, etc... or making $25/hour and no benefits?
The current system rewards those who don't move up the ladder to become self sufficient. It's systematic.

I'd like to see the numbers regarding food prices supposedly increasing.
I'm willing to bet food is cheaper than it's ever been in history in regards to total output to obtain a sufficient diet.
Just b/c kraft macaroni and cheese has gone up .20 c over the last two years doesn't necessarily mean food is more expensive.

Costs are determined by supply and demand. For basic goods that everyone needs, market forces would never price out an entire legion of consumers

The minimum wage is not a destination; it is the starting point-- even in low end fast food jobs, things like being on the job 90 days will produce bumps above the minimum wage, frequently.
If you do not want to earn minimum wage, there are a number of helpful tips:
Show up to work. Be on time. Listen to, and follow simple instructions. Find a skill within your workplace to specialize in, to the point of being better at that thing than your co-workers.
If you do these things, the sky may not be the limit, but the minimum wage will eventually be in your rear view mirror, and the world of better options will slowly open up for you.
Work to get ahead. It is why they call it work, after all.

Minimum wage is a starting point, so you should make more than that anyway. Part time workers don't deserve to make enough to worry about rising gas and food costs. If they're that worried about it, then they're probably working 2 jobs anyway.

OP, why would a supplier price something at a value that puts it out of reach of consumers?
Posted on 5/19/14 at 4:53 pm to LarrytheGolfer
if you raise minimum wage because food costs and gas costs are rising, then those costs will exponentially rise again...then what?

My wife has a distant relative who worked two fast food jobs plus some college work, raising three kids. In three years, she is the mgr of her own restaurant and making middle class money.

Impossibru!!! Min wage workers are simply a victim of their circumstance and are at an unfair disadvantage!!!
Posted on 5/19/14 at 5:02 pm to LarrytheGolfer
Minimum wage is not supposed to last an entire career it is a starting point but our workforce is full of slapdicks who are comfortable making Gorditas and don't realize it.

Exactly, and if they incur more expenses, they will simply cut back somewhere else, either in another job lost, or in cutting back on product.

its not how much you make, it's your buying power, raise the mw and costs go up, your buying power stays the same, however everyone else buying power just went down, this is how you shrink the middle class.

so, you want gas and food prices to rise even faster and higher?
