We sent one of the refurbished battleships off the coast of Lebanon and proceeded to frick shite up.

We just didn't do it for long enough.

That's what he did before the barracks were bombed, not after. The USS New jersey is what caused the Marines to get killed in the first place.

What did he do 6 months before that when the American Embassy in Beirut was bombed killing 63 people?

Well actually he did give one of the dumbest quotes in political history:

quote:

Mr. Reagan, referring yesterday to the incomplete security measures, said, ''Anyone that's ever had their kitchen done over knows that it never gets done as soon as you wish it would.''

Revisionist history in regards to Reagan is one of my favorite things about the current GOP.

Barracks were bombed on October 23, 1983. New Jersey shelled on February 9, 1984.

It was the New Jersey

quote:
BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 8 - The United States battleship New Jersey bombarded Druse and Syrian gun batteries in Lebanon for more than nine hours today in the heaviest and most sustained American military action since the marines arrived here 16 months ago.

As I said, the understanding of history on this board is appalling.

The Jersey didn't get rolling with heavy bombardments until february. Months after the Beirut bombings.

Sort of. We had been shelling positions with smaller ships. The natives decided we were no longer neutral and took it out on the marines (and french).

I love me some Ronald Reagan. But when major terror events occurred in the world...generally speaking he did little about them.

Crack a book sometime guys and turn off fox news if you want to learn about America's greatest president.

Same here. The denial is incredible. You won't hear a damn chirp about Iran-Contra.

From the article I linked,

quote:

Previously [to Feb 8, 1984], the Americans had fired their naval guns only in retaliation for attacks on the Marine compound

The Navy had shelled Lebanon for retaliation for the barracks bombing. I know you libs want to act like Reagan cut and run, but we shelled the hell out of that coast.

Considering how poorly received this thread was, and the overall political leanings of this board, I don't think you need to worry too much about blind conservative deification of Reagan.

Eldorado Canyon plus essentially destroying the Libyan AF doesn't count for anything? Gulf of Sidra and line of death doesn't ring a bell?

One of my fovorites

quote:

WASHINGTON — In a stunning turn of events in the night skies over the Mediterranean late Thursday, U.S. Navy F-14 fighters intercepted an Egyptian airliner carrying the four Palestinian terrorists who hijacked an Italian cruise liner and murdered an elderly American tourist, then forced the plane to fly to a U.S. naval base in Sicily, the White House announced.

The wimpy Italians wouldn't extradite to the US because of capital punishment. Such a shame.

So 63 people were killed in our embassy in April 83 and 241 marines in October 83 and he shelled the coast in Feb 84?

And you guys laughed at Clinton for shelling AQ and Saddam.

In both bombings in Lebanon, security was woefully inadequate. Plus we already had 4 other embassies hit earlier. Benghazi was child's play compared to those casualties.

I posted that several weeks back. Just imagine the OUTRAGE if Obama said anything remotely similar.

No. Shelling the coast was secondary and did as much damage to the civilians we were suppose to be helping as the targets we were trying to hit.

Also...

"Eventually, it became evident that the U.S. would launch no serious and immediate retaliatory attack for the Beirut Marine barracks bombing beyond naval barrages and air strikes used to interdict continuous harassing fire from Druze and Syrian missile and artillery sites.[86] A true retaliatory strike failed to materialize because there was a rift in White House counsel..."

Oh I am well aware of those. Like I said, "generally speaking" he did little about such things.

People on this board act as if within moments of a terror incident (and there were plenty during the 80s) happened Reagan kicked arse and took names.

That couldn't be further from the truth. I still fully believe to this day the invasion of Grenada was fully to distract the American population from the Beirut bombings.

Isis is funded by the US and other countries governments. It's not crazy to think were giving them money to take over hostile regions and destabilize the region.
