Removing troops from Korean peninsula?

Would we need still need troops there?

May give China the motivation to take steps necessary to begin downfall, possibly cutting off supplies etc.

Will happen in our life time.

Doubtful that this will happen because of China.

If for some crazy reason the downfall of NK resulted in a unified Korea instead of a slightly expanded China, I would expect to see quite a bit of culture shock from the North Koreans as the 21st Century quickly descended upon them. Possibly even a bit of push-back as NK is somewhat xenophobic.

We have troops all across the globe for cold war reason but they are still there. I'm guessing there will always be a major troop presence in Korea no matter what happens.

it would be a nice bitch slap to China if god emperor Trump made the unification happen and snatched that card right out of the communist hands. Another reason why our commy loving leftist would shite themselves.

I spent the weekend with my sister in law from China. Her city is 30 miles from NK border. She was joking that a Chinese man can get a NK bride for a box of ramen. Four boxes four brides. It's so much worse there than we can imagine.

It took a couple of decades to fully integrate East Germany and they were nowhere near as backward and isolated as NK is. The best case scenario is a humanitarian crisis on a scale not seen since WWII. the worst case is long term famine and civil war.

North Korea will collapse because it cannot maintain the status quo. If they didn't have nukes, I believe China and South Korea would be fine with keeping North Korea the way it is. Neither wants the burden of bringing 20+ million brainwashed, backwards people into their fold. It would be like trying to bring a kid raised by wolves into your house and trying to civilize them. Not to mention the ginormous economic drain it would be trying to bring NK up to code. Just ask the Krauts about that, but this would be a thousand times worse.

There is no real reason for us to have troops there anyways as it is. They are nothing but a target for the Kim regime.

South Koreans want no part in unification.

They would be adding 25 million welfare recipients if they unified.

One would expect a slow draw down of forces and most bases remaining.

If the Kim regime collapsed, NK will still be NK but the leader would be someone that China wants in power there to keep NK as a client state.

And frick no to withdrawing from SK. SK and Japan are client/puppet states of the US essentially and I don't want to give that up.

I came here to post similar. From few things I've only read, they essentially swim a river or risk death elsewhere to escape to china to eat garbage. It's at least eating. I didn't even think of NK women going to China yet as concubines.

That's bad!!! Actually being able to say "concubine" in proper context.

That's not a trade, it's a best case scenario.

The problem is that China doesn't want a united Korea that is aligned with Japan and the U.S. There is a huge geopolitical impediment to meaningful Korean unity even in the instance Un is removed, as the United States doesn't want a unified Korea that is either aligned with or under the political domination of the Chinese either.

Really, a realistic scenario that would be desirable is simply the removal of the Kim dynasty and political reorganization that installs a sane government in North Korea but falls short of unification right away. This could allow U.S. withdrawal of forces from South Korea over time and might permit a rapprochement of the Korea's as well that may one day lead to unification. Unification as a sudden occurrence is just not a political reality imo for a number of reasons.
