It wouldn't surprise me if Taiwan has their own "Sampson Option" if things get grim.

Drop it on Three-Gorges and half the Chinese population starves to death in under a year, and that's no joke.

Actually a good question. I lived in China for 3 years. I’m very passionate about this issue and know a lot about it. Sorry, I know what their government is about and I have Taiwanese friends. It’s definitely an obsession of mine.

Similar situation for me. I was kicked out of Taiwan when Carter recognized mainland China as the real China and ended up spending my formative years bouncing through Asia and Africa. So the region and its idiosyncrasies have always fascinated me.

And the PRC has very limited ability to project their combat power

That’s one of the reasons they don’t even raid Taiwan. Like ever. The Formosa Strait might as well be the Atlantic Ocean.

Taiwan has anti-ship missiles. Their integrated air defense is good. The Japanese wouldn’t just watch it happen, Filipinos either.

Taiwan is a “latent nuclear power.” It could make simple atomic weapons in a short amount of time. Worse case scenario is a sneak attack and invasion. In which case it has enough nuclear material from its “research reactors” on hand to load into missiles and make dirty bombs to attack the invasion fleet. The PRC would respond accordingly. So to answer your question, it would not look good.

Taiwan is a heavily defended island. It would not be easy for the commies

It is and it being an island is no small part of that equation.

They should probably go fully to a Swiss Army type organization so they can very cost effectively field a massive modern army on extremely short notice. The Swiss Army spends almost all of their budget on equipment because they have very few staffing costs as a militia army. That keeps them very well armed.

As is, Taiwan has a population of about 23 million and can mobilize nearly 5 million by calling up all reservists. Call-ups can be slow when a lot of that is reservists and China could strike fast. No doubt, Taiwan will have its spies and early warning though.

I wonder how China would attack if they did? A massive air drop and seaborn landings after destroying air and sea resistance?

Britain and France declared war on Germany after they invaded Poland. Maybe you mean the Rhineland, the Sudetenland, or Austria?

Exactly. In that situation you gain nothing by submission. Give them the worst of whatever you can muster. All is fair and on the table.

Are you suggesting that the CCP can swim across that significant stretch of ocean? The Nazis didn't invade Britain due to a lot less water.

Add to the fact that some Taiwanese airbases are built into the mountains makes getting complete control of the area a difficult task.

They could really use a lot of the current vertical take-off and landing fighters in that mix. It would be much easier to hide their fields.

The Nazis nearly had the English air force on the ropes when they were bombing and attacking the air fields. The switch to bombing infrastructure and civilian production changed the equation and gave the RAF a breather.

A lot of dead people? Vicious brutal fighting in streets and neighborhoods of Taipei. Children, elderly, and innocent people caught in the fighting. A disaster of epic proportions.

Cut to Dementia Joe Biden enjoying his afternoon snack of rainbow jello, and mumbling to his dogs. A surreal picture indeed.

Buyers remorse from Biden voters? But too damn late.

The fact you even asked this question bears out no one should even attempt to answer you.

Island or naval based invasions have always been a gamble and or a disaster.

Normandy and Inchon are the exception and still required luck to succeed.

No, a bloody invasion of Taiwan would be the biggest PR disaster in history. Global outrage would be enormous. China depends on customers for their products. They are powerful but they're not stupid. Taiwan is not worth having the planet consider you worse than Hitler.
