Pardon my ignorance on Airforce ranks, but why are so many high ranking officers on that plane?

I am from Bossier city where Barksdale AFB is and growing up all my friends were all Air Force kids and it was common for their to be high ranking people on B-52's . Pilots, Weapons officers etc.

I once saw a readiness exercise from off base and the sound off all the B-52;s taking off so close to each other was deafening.

If you have never watched it their is a movie with Karl Malden of the beginning of the B-52's.

I wonder if new radar system was a contributing factor. This is a very sad event. Best wishes to their family.
