I don’t even know what you’re attempting to talk about right now. Are you drunk?

I just want my money back.

Ok.

All I said was I want the ability to opt out.

I thought Trump had a good idea with this. If US can get energy independence (more refineries not just pumping oil) that they might could fund something like that.

Would be interesting to hear the whole idea.

We should be allocating that money to young, productive people. We’re currently paying rich people to not work. It’s arse backwards if we’re going to have an entitlement like that.

You want to take money that old people were forced to contribute all their working lives, and give it to young people who have just started working?

Just want to make sure I’m clear on your plan here.

I would need my contributions for the last 50+ years returned .... and I'd be good with that.

The problem is neither party wants to upset the boomer generation. And I'm totally against raising the SS tax by 2% just so it's intact for another 75 years.

Why are we procrastinating about a problem that's been plaguing us since 1989? Are both parties afraid of losing voters?

Great podcast with Gromen who breaks down the math better than anyone. It is a ponzi scheme that was always going to grenade when the boomers started retiring. However, poor policy choices have accelerated it's demise. Covid policy stimulated a huge wave of boomer retirements which otherwise would have been spread out on a longer timeline. Then there's the whole exporting our industrial base to support the bond market so we could finance trillions in questionable wars.

I didn’t say that. The current policy is incoherent. It needs to be wound down or we need to invest it in real securities. I said if we have a program like this it should not be going to asset rich retirees.

I've put in for over 70. I still have to contribute even though I've bee drawing SS for 11 years. Go figure.

SS is a DC racket where the government borrows money at blue light special rates and then pays it back in inflated dollars worth a fraction of the original money.

Stop paying for wars we’re not technically involved in.

It kind of sounded like you did:

That’s why I phrased it as a question though; maybe I am misunderstanding what you’re actually saying.

Because it sounds to me like you’re saying it again in your reply:
quote:

I said if we have a program like this it should not be going to asset rich retirees.

Are you advocating for means testing to receive social security benefits?

I’m fine with it if I get the 200,000 dollars that I’ve paid in over the last 30 years!

At a 7% average annual return that should be worth ~$630k had it just been put in an index fund over the years so that’s what you’re actually owed by the government.

For anyone actually paying taxes social security is just a state sponsored ponzi scheme you can’t opt out of without being jailed.

I’m retired, and yes both me and my wife draw it.

Do I need it to live on? No

Did we pay a lot into it with no choice? Yes, which is why I expect the check. Monthly or a lump sum of what I put in plus interest, either works.

How do we change that? Smart way would be phase it out by starting everyone under 20 getting no SS cut from their income, but they don’t get any.

Unfortunately given the number of the lazy and stupid the option then becomes care for them or let them starve. The government hasn’t had the will to do the latter in a very long time and I don’t think it’s possible for them to change it.

boomer generation

I’ve been working and paying into the SS Ponzi for nearly 40 years. I am Gen X. My generation will be drawing social security in a couple years (if the current Gen X cutoff is around 60 yo).

At least boomers have enjoyed the benefits for years. We’ll probably see jack.
