I get that one doesn't want to associate with relatives that are politically opposite of your beliefs, but to state that in public tells me that the dame is a self-centered kook.

it's what happens when you demonize an entire political group. to the left, literally all conservatives are hate fueled racists, homophobes, misogynists, and all of the ists. they dont view conservatives as good people with differing views - we are literally all different degrees of evil.
the "whataboutism" here is legitimate as well. many on the right demonize the left. i truly think the difference is that we view leftist ideology as evil (i absolutely believe that communism is an evil, oppressive system). but i also acknowledge that many, maybe even most, leftists genuinely arrived at many of their beliefs because they are actually good people who are just extremely naive when it comes to their faith in benevolent government.
