I think you know the answer to this.

Lets just say he probably didn't come to America documented.

And legally.

I will do a 2 for 1 deal today with you.

You take my 2 American pieces of shite who didn’t come to work yesterday, I’ll take your problem off your hands for you.

Hell! I’ll even throw on the 3 re-tread deadbeat Americans who bother me periodically with the same annoying call,” I got my shot together now. I’m just looking for work”

First of all, in 21 years of being in The States, he couldn't learn to speak English?
You don't think that his unwillingness to assimilate, led to his lack of understanding about the process to stay legal?
How about some personal responsibility on his part, instead of just worn out excuses?

He probably knew his time was up to be here legally,20 years ago, so he decided to fade into the Barrio. Why not? It's so easy to do.

That's the problem. It needs to be made hard to be here illegally. Very hard.

Yes he came in legally..

his visa expired...

that's as much as I know...

been here 24 years

you people keep saying "he didn't learn English, didn't assimilate"

he assimilated just fine in the construction industry...

do you people realize Hispanics do concrete, masonry, framing, roofing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, paint, flooring, cleaning

they do it A to Z ....all over the country...Including commercial work

these humble people actually have skill and a worth ethic many spoiled Americans will not do, can no do...

we have a labor shortage across the country

wake up, then use your head and realize....they are in our work force, many legal, many probably not...

most have no clue what to do...

It is just crazy to stop people who work, pay their own way, and do not need welfare from entering or living in America.

What is the rationale for excluding working people from our society?

To me, the immigration issue is similar to the one with our trade imbalance with China.
Neither situation should have been allowed to digress to this level. But, now both are tricky situations with no easy answers.

Most living people of the world are not criminal, and have never committed a crime. I'd venture to say that most of the people crossing the US border illegally aren't criminals. Why would this point of non-criminality affect the decision of illegal trespass?

Is it that we only want non-criminal illegal aliens?

I think the President has been pretty clear on that issue

People with clean history and a skill, "Merit based" where these people bring a contribution to America rather than being a burden...

Trump is exactly right to think about merit based immigration. He should add to that the requirement they maintain health insurance.

He should not limit green cards for such people. People like your contractor who meet the no welfare criteria should be given green cards ASAP. The realty is they are here and have been for some time. There is no need to pretend we can carry out mass deportations of such people.

Why are we jumping to citizenry? He could have become a resident, and been ok. Why no new immigration law for illegals should include citizenry as that gives them the right to vote.

Things are out of control. As we are all here wasting time talking about this one guy, there are 100 of thousands per month coming to this country. Reported estimates for April...98k. Thats nuts!

This guy, and his family have known it's a possibility for a long time. They have to live with that. They, and everyone else, should be pissed at their home countries for being so crappy. Perhaps mass deportation of American educated people can actually help those nations, not hurt them.

Ohhhh and does your contractor have a flag of his nation of birth on his vehicle??

I also learned he has been here for 24 years...no "criminal" history (that I know of), married w/ 2 teenagers who were very young when they came to America.

He doesn't have a work permit or visa, no driver's license at this time, ...according to his daughter (who drives him to work) today he did many years have a license but it's unclear why it wasn't maintained. She mentioned he was not properly informed about Amnesty when it was offered...(I have no way of validating this part of the story)

Why is he one of my favorite contractors? For starters he's really skilled and does a great job, he always smiles, you can tell he enjoys his work, he has the attitude you want, he always shows up early , he works really hard until the job is done, then he goes home to his family. (Hard to find these days!!) I never asked about his status until today. These are real situations where you think "gosh, this is who we need to become a citizen, but what would be the next step to "get right"?" I know of 2 other similar situations.

It was reported today ICE is transporting 225,000 migrants from the border and will essentially delivery these people across the country. Why? This large group of people includes many children, apparently their court dates are extended out to 2021 -2022 because the backlog is that deep.

This went mostly unreported, but we have approximately 1,000,000 people in the United States who have been served "Must leave papers" because we learned after due diligence they falsified their asylum claims. #goodluckwiththat

I don't know what the answer is

The answer is to make it easy to work here and make their presence legal

at one time he had legal residency status with a work visa, or permit...

he let it expire....I don't know the reason...

His daughter likes Trump and actually uttered the words "I have no issue with the wall"

"I like what he's saying about his proposals on Immigration"

"mexico is not a safe place"

Oddly enough, I sat next to a travel agent watching the horse race a couple weekends ago and she told me Mexico is still one the one of the best and safest places to vacation..".

I mentioned the Cartel murdering 122 politicians in 2017-2018, even recently shooting stories going on in Cancun, she said, "well what if people in Europe based coming to America off of watching local news in Chicago?... they would get the impression the USA is very unsafe place, but that's not true."

perspective depends on your location and personal experiences

Lacks command of the English language is the short answer...

combined with fear and ignorance

Someone who has been in a country for 25 fricking years should know how to speak the most common language.

I agree with those who say that the rule of law should be followed, but people like this (the "good ones") will probably be included in some form of negotiations with democrats. And you also mentioned the lack of people in construction. I know where a huge number of people are that could do that job if we deported the illegals. They just need to be incentivized. Hunger is a great motivator. Stop all welfare to able bodied unemployed people and PRESTO you have a large labor force. Yes they will need some training but they can do the work.

76k in March...

225,000 currently being bused to a city near you...due to court dates so backed up...

this is most damning thing ever...

we deport people here and have been here
we capture people crossing illegally at the border
we build tents, feed, cloth, treat,
we give out court dates until we have had time to process who they are, and validate their reasons for coming here
we bus to a city and state so they won't burden just border states
we have known cities around the country as 'sanctuary cities'

Yet, me as a contractor, I am supposed to turn in this skilled guy who has been here for 24 years because he doesn't have his paper work in order....?

makes freakin perfect sense given all the other madness

"Just need some training"

You think people on welfare, people who are conditioned to take and be do the minimum to receive their checks (many on drugs) are suddenly going to be willing to work physically for 50 hours a week in the construction industry and give us the quality and speed we need?

It's not going to happen

we have skilled labor who loves to work already here...

this is why America is in trouble....

Americans are getting fat and lazy...our youth is not ready to work...they all want to sit around and chat on Instagram...

I believe you're thinking like an American, meaning you are making assumptions about his education before he came here...

he can speak some English, but he doesn't read or write English...his daughter handles that...

I wouldn't say that's a norm for illegals, but its the truth about this particular individual
