Me either. He was by far my favorite comedic voice of all time.

quote:

or nine years he suffered and did not let anyone know. Talk about dying well. I hope my death can emulate that.
This I don't agree with as much. The most similar figure that comes to mind is Freddie Mercury - he had AIDS and never said a word until less than 24 hours before he died. If you listen to songs from that last album he did (particularly "The Show Must Go On") you can see that he swallowed the suffering for the sake of his art. The news out of Norm's camp is that he did the same thing - he did not want the comedy to be affected by his illness.

And I think that might make sense for suffering artists. But what are we saying is the supposed benefit for us ordinary humans of such hyper-stoicism?

I also think that Norm gave quite a bit of a frick...it's just his modality of expressing it was of the opposite persona. Go watch him the last week of Letterman when he was unable to keep from openly weeping...out of utter gratitude for the man who had given him a big break.

I think Norm gave quite a lot of fricks...about humanity and civilization.

Jesus would probably tell you not to judge or ridicule your neighbor on who they choose to be their hero

Or worship false idols

A comedian’s job is to give the middle finger to the king and inspire others around him. I’m proud to call Norm one of my personal heroes. Maybe he wasn’t Churchill, but he knowingly repeatedly sacrificed his career for the joke. He was not coward. You are.

How is Norm a false idol? I haven’t declared him God. Is only God allowed to be a hero, because if so that’s a very petty God I don’t want to worship?

Right. Not giving a frick about vapid degraded modern pop culture is not the same thing as just not giving a frick. Most people understood what was meant here, I’m guessing.

I stand by comment that I can’t deny you what makes a hero in your eyes. You should petition for a statue for him. George Floyd’s got one! Why not norm?

Don’t see where calling someone a hero equates to worshiping them or considering them a personal eternal savior. But ok

That being said-
Bet you didn’t think I could find this this time of year

Nothing. Norm McDonald is not a hero. Period. Hero is a word that gets thrown around too cavalier IMO. He’s a great comedian. And he should be respected for being that. He’s not some hero. For example: People think George Floyd is a hero, and we equate hero status with crackhead who fought police. It’s an overused term. He was a great comedian, not a hero like George Floyd! RIP Norm

“I’m no doctor, but I’m pretty sure if you die of cancer, the cancer dies with you. So that’s not really a loss, that’s a draw.”

This joke got a laugh but I’m pretty sure he wrote this when he had cancer and no one knew.

Norm said on the view that Clinton is a murderer - that’s a hero in my book.

You have to be a total fricking retard to compare someone who is in the debate for the greatest comedian of all time with someone who puts a gun to the belly of a pregnant woman.
