According to Fox News, the statement appears in a recently released deposition transcript from Hunter Biden’s dispute with Winston Taylor, a law firm with ties to prominent Democrats.

The firm says Hunter owes $17 million. Hunter’s position is that the lawyers knew he could not pay and agreed they would eventually “work something out.”

The legal work allegedly covered Hunter’s criminal prosecutions, congressional investigations and defamation lawsuits against his critics. The deposition took place in February, but Hunter’s new lawyers released the transcript only in recent days.

Hunter testified that he owns no car, no phone, no stocks, no bonds and no savings accounts. The only property of possible value he identified was his own artwork, whose value he said he did not know.

Winston Taylor says it tried to connect him with Democratic donors who could help cover the bill. Hunter contends the firm accepted the representation with full knowledge that he lacked the money to pay its fees.

Hunter described himself as essentially asset-free.

He said he owns no car, no phone, no stocks, no bonds and no savings accounts. The only property of potential value he identified was his own artwork—and even there, he said he did not know what the paintings were worth.

He also insisted the bill is not his family’s debt.

That last point is legally sensible. A son’s lawyers cannot simply send a $17 million invoice to his father, his stepmother or the rest of the family.

Politically and culturally, however, the “my family doesn’t have any money” claim is hard to separate from everything Americans were told for years.

Hunter Biden was paid a seven-figure salary while serving on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma. He sold paintings for large sums despite having no established career in the art world.

His memoir produced an advance. His surname delivered access that ordinary Americans could not buy at any price.

Now, when the lawyers want to be paid, the cupboard is supposedly bare.

Fox reported that Winston Taylor says it tried to connect Hunter with donors in the Democratic financial network who could help cover his bills. Hunter argues the firm understood his financial condition when it took the work and cannot now pretend the risk was a surprise.

That dispute will turn on contracts, communications and evidence—not on anyone’s political opinion.

Still, the numbers expose the extraordinary scale of the legal machinery built around the former president’s son.

Seventeen million dollars is not the tab for one routine court appearance. The firm says the balance covers work related to criminal prosecutions, congressional inquiries and defamation litigation.

Hunter faced federal gun and tax cases before receiving a sweeping pardon from his father in December 2024. He also pursued civil claims against several people who amplified or used material attributed to his abandoned laptop.

One of those cases produced a judgment—but not necessarily a check.

Fox noted that Hunter won a $1.7 million award in July in his defamation case against former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne. Winston Taylor is seeking a lien against that judgment, while collecting from Byrne may be complicated because he is reportedly overseas.

So even Hunter’s courtroom win has become part of the fight over who gets paid first.

The broader family finances do not sound comfortable either.

Fox cited reporting that former President Joe Biden left office carrying roughly $800,000 in personal debt and has struggled to secure the kind of lucrative speaking opportunities that made previous presidents wealthy. At the same time, Joe Biden reportedly receives more than $400,000 annually in government pensions.

More than $400,000 in annual pension income sits far above the financial reality of most American families.

That pension cannot absorb a $17 million demand, but “cannot pay Hunter’s bill” is a very different claim from “the family has no money.”

This is what makes the deposition so revealing.

For years, the Biden operation moved through a world where introductions, legal help, public-relations support and major financial opportunities appeared whenever needed. The family name functioned like an asset even when no one put it on a balance sheet.

But influence is not cash, and relationships are not collateral.

When the presidency ended, Hunter’s pardon removed the threat of federal punishment. It did not erase the private bills accumulated along the way.

Now the lawyers who helped him navigate the investigations want their money, and the president’s son says there is nothing left to take.

Maybe the contracts support Hunter’s version. Maybe they support the firm’s.

The courts can sort that out.

But Americans are entitled to notice the final irony.

The family that spent years insisting its overseas connections and political access were ordinary business now says the business produced no lasting wealth.

Hunter Biden’s defense is not that the bill is small.

It is that the Biden name has finally stopped paying.
