That design protected states from federal overreach. The public might favor a policy like a national drinking age of 21, but a senator accountable to a state legislature would never vote to let Washington strong-arm the state by threatening to withhold funds.
Why? When have states ever declined increased spending ability?
The issue is how that funding is possible, which is commerce clause expansion via Wickard. Not the "General Welfare" clause or the "necessary and proper clause". Those are beholden to the CC providing the authority in the first place.
States will always become whores, regardless of how their Senators are selected. In fact, it's more likely that "the establishment" in each state is more likely to favor being whores. Citizens are much more likely to oppose this sort of spending.
You want a great example proving my point? The OG Tea Party in 2010
Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Rubio, etc. never get a shot with the old system specifically because they wanted reform off taxing/spending.

Why not change the weak arse people?
Until then, any legislation will just make it worse.
The only chance we have is through honest elections.
Remains to be seen if that can happen.

Start with the 17th Amendment
I'd argue starting with the 19th and 15th would work faster.

Senators were originally meant to represent state governments, not popular opinion.
Again do you think in anyway this would be an improvement.
Its obviously popular with a subset of burn anything that feels non original.
But every one of you is avoiding the fact that modern political parties are nothing like this imagined states rights world that never existed.
Again, why are these state political machines going to be any different than how senators are appointed on a vacancy.
