re: How many of you actually interact with or know government workers?

I deal with folks one-on-one at DOS regularly. As others have said, there are one or two with a work ethic and common sense. Most of the rest are average or less-than-average Joes. Some are absolute idiots, and I have proof.
The idea that they have sacrificed to be a public servant is absolute crap. These folks are generally overpaid for their abilities and efforts in an, up until now, risk-free career with better benefits than they could expect in the private sector for what they do.
P.S. Remind me how many government workers were furloughed or fired during COVID and how does that compare to the posters on this board? My company furloughed 75% for 6-9 months.

Various agencies report that the pay range for an electrical engineer working for the federal government is $102-143K. Let's say the midpoint is $120K.
Your company pays mid-level engineers $600K per year?
I know several electricians that make north of 300k...

Program/funding cuts will hit you just as easily before you get too excited over others potentially losing their jobs.
Maybe so. If it is necessary for me to lose my job in order to keep the country from going bankrupt, so be it. I've never had trouble finding a job. This is not about me, this about my country.

Get a real job
I am intrigued by this statement. And what, oh great purveyor of internet wisdom, do you consider a real job???
Is having two degrees of which were paid for by the holder and working 20 plus years and earning exemplary ratings throughout not indicative of someone who has a real job?
I apologize if a person having a good salary and benefits as well as a retirement plan upsets you. But it will be ok, DOGE won’t cast out people like this. It’s only trash.
You people really have no idea what is happening. You have no idea what is coming.
There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth by the year 2028 all across the world. The only thing I’m looking forward to is how you and your ilk will somehow spin it as being the fault of dems and trannies.

I know a few that work for USDOT or its sub-agencies, they're pretty good and bust their asses.
I know that a lot of government employees are very hard workers and are very good at their jobs.
But what if the jobs they do are unnecessary?
DOGE is not selecting people to fire based on their work ethic or competence, or lack thereof. It is about whether the function they perform is necessary or not.

Brother in law works the support desk for the VA.
He does absolutely nothing and is coasting until retirement.
Cut his arse.
Following up after I saw him this weekend.
He's keeping his job, but has to go into office 5 days a week in a month. He's currently scrambling to find daycare options for his 1 year old.
This bastard has been taking care of his baby all day while "working".
I'm really happy this is unfolding.

I was a software engineer with a defense contactor. We worked with lots of agencies.
I know lots of good employees.
I also have a close relative who worked with the GSA, and I was not impressed with GSA employees.
I still think a reduction in the size of govt is a good thing. Really good employees will get their jobs back or find employment elsewhere.

I work for the DoD and no I'm not being cut. I do have to send my 5 things email. It's really simple takes like 10 minutes. I am busy as a one leg man in a jump rope contest.

Government work used to be seen as prestigious. They sacrifice salary for public service and security
Lol
People who work in the government don’t do it because the are trying to serve. Most want to benefit from the loophole that guarantees a job and a fat pension no matter what.
Hopefully, that loophole is being closed.

The pension isn't fat. It's basically the same as a 401k and we pay into it every check. I actually pay more into it than I do my 401k. I'm sure it's not the same for all federal jobs though.

I used to think that about all govt jobs, but the fat pensions are mainly still only found in local government, sometimes state. From what I've seen a federal pension will keep you from starving but it's not replacing your salary.

Yea, I'm sure the DC bureaucrats are on a whole different pay scale, benefits and retirement plans than prior military in the DoD.

Nope, that isn't how it works.
There is a huge difference between a contractor that works for the government and a contractor that works for private industry.
Huge.

I am / was a Federal employee who took advantage of the buyout and have selected retirement. I was a very good employee but I also know that just like anyone else, my job was expendable. No one is above replacement. I chose the buyout because I wasn’t going to work past December which will give me ten years with my agency. When I hit my selected retirement date, I wish I was getting a fat pension but I’m not. I’m thankful for my military retirement, TSP and social security because, without those, my Fed retirement would be just enough to rent a cardboard box under an overpass.
