How did the Republican base get duped by Trump?

Trump uses Muslims, immigration as a Boogeyman to keep us divided as a country because it would exposure him as a terrible president. Nobody in his base has the balls to challenge him and yet they will quickly cry snowflake. He has bankers in his back pocket with Goldman Sachs. How did a once proud base go from Andrew Jackson to this shitty arse president like Donald Trump? We revolted in 1776 as tyranny to avoid authoritarians and rejected natavism.
Benjamin Franklin warned of the siren's call for power by government officials when he observed that "those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
PS, we've stagnated in wages since the 1970s. The American dream died a long time ago.

He is moderate in a lot of ways, if that’s what you mean.
But he is also very conservative in many ways and gets things done at a much faster clip than any president (politician?) than I have ever seen.
