GM is hugely profitable and with this move will get even more so. They and Ford are the envy of the world because they have the hot sellers. Trucks and SUV's.
Ford actually went broke before GM. And were lucky to do so since the big banks were till loaning money. So he banks bailed them out.

No one I've seen analyzing the automakers' debate has hit upon what I suspect is the real thing going on here. If I've missed it, forgive me.
It's not SUV vs sedan, or truck versus an electric vehicle, or even steel tariffs, or automation...
It's the Uber/Lyft effect. People aren't as reliant on their own cars psychologically as much as they used to be, in an enormous way. The shift in auto sales, I think, may be more explainable by this than anything else.

Ford is replacing the cars they are dropping with small trucks and SUVs built in the same plants in the USA. Gm is not doing that.

Wrong. New auto sales in the USA have been roaring at all time record breaking levels. But the market has shifted. Trucks and SUV's have taken over. Sedans have fallen way off. Simple.
