I think I may have entered into the phase, very abruptly I may add, that I am interested in learning about battles fought throughout human history. I would be very open to any suggestions on where to start, but I would LOVE to have a book that covers as many as possible in a "cliffnotes" sorta way so I can sort of sneak peek at a ton of them to see which ones I want to deep dive into.

Thanks in advance, brethren.

Honestly, that’s gonna be one of the big coffee table like books. That just gives a general overview of battles and shite with pictures, maps, etc.

Then once you find what kinda thing or age you’re interested in, you can dive into more niche and more detailed books

I just started reading about the Battle of Somme in WW1. It sounded God-awful.

Watch all if the episodes on YouTube called “ Battles BC.”
Some of those battlefield tactics are still heralded today.
I will say this, Moses’ right hand man, Joshua, was a baaaad dude.

The hardest to read history book I ever came across was The Somme. Just madness and brutality.

To the OP there are some like you mention, Civil War Greatest Blunders, Captured by the Indians(true tales) Race of Aces WWII, 1776, Run Silent Run Deep Guadalcanal Diary, This Is Your War by Ernie Pyle to name a few I have read.

But by author can't miss great reads anything by:
Shelby Foote
Stephen Ambrose
Bruce Catton
David McCullough
James McPherson
Bell Wiley (The life of Johnny Reb and then Billy Yank are must Civil War reads)

Used book stores are great to visit and always cheap for history books. Good luck and have fun

The OT is a great place to start learning about war and killing. The first thing you notice about war in the OT is God's chosen people would get their butts kicked if they waged war on their own terms, in other words if the war was not for a righteous cause God's people were on their own and they generally got their butts kicked. Fast forward to modern times and the same could be said about the US, the last war the US tasted victory was WWII.....it was a just war.

Art of War is a must read into the psychology of warfare

There’s a lot of different fields you could focus into whether it’s the tactical level, operational, or grand strategy/geopolitics.

That was Steve Spurrier's favorite book, if I remember correctly. He applied a lot of it to football strategy.

the Smithsonian has several coffee table style map by map history books that are all pretty solid.

You won’t be going into the nitty gritty details with any of them but it’s a fantastic place to start and get a feel for what you’re interested in.

And they are just fun to look through from time to time .

Honestly I was about to say that BUT my other admonition was going to be I turn these shows on to go to sleep to. Trust me, it works!

I won’t be back home for almost two weeks, but I have a book there about all the great battles in the history of England/UK. I can’t remember the name, though.

If you would like a history of one of the most momentous battles of all time - Waterloo - I suggest you read one of three excerpts in fiction: Les Miserables, War & Peace, and the Waterloo volume of the Sharpe series. For the first two, you needn’t read the whole book, simply start at the battle. They are quite good histories.

Homo saipens vs Neanderthals is a pretty good starting point I think.

Spoiler: We won.

Battle of the Somme

"19,000 Englishmen were killed before noon, a whole generation wiped out in 3 hours."
Entire towns in Northern Lancashire and South Yorkshire had a whole generation of men completely wiped out."

I’ve been hooked on the “history that doesn’t suck” podcast. Good american history stuff in an entertaining format.
