Help me out baws

Have a friend bitching about his taxes being 8K more this year under Trump.
Makes 400K/year. Pays 13K in property taxes on TX. Has 4 kids.
Then he mentions he is attending a Dem find raiser where Pelosi will be in attendance.
I tell him he's an idiot to give money to the party that would tax him even more, given his income.
He replies that it is Trump/Republicans that drove up his taxes this year.
I don't know enough about the tax plan to understand why his taxes went up that much (except that his property tax claim is capped at 10K.)
I mean, why would you donate any money to either party if you feel your taxes went up that much?
Dont people know that their tax dollars are subsidizing the slush funds of both?

He has 5 acres and that was his property tax...13K.
Not sure why that makes anyone a liar. Again, I don't know all the specifics of his taxes, but something is off or he just doesn't know shite about taxes.

Saying #2 without the qualifier is just as bad as them. We clearly understand they want

I make like an 1/8th of that, live in Illinois, probably have way less house and pay half of that in property taxes. Tell him to stop bitching.

How so???
13k in property taxes within the loop is only a $600k house give or take.
ETA: And for reference, $600k houses inside the loop of Houston is very common.

I’d sincerely ask him to look at his tax liability on the year as opposed to judging by end of year returns. How much did he keep each paycheck vs how much was he expecting back?
That means they didn’t look and adjust based on tax laws changes.
People that are used to getting money back and hoping for that money aren’t doing it right. No offense to your friend.
ETA: Also I’m in Bell County, there are plenty of people I know that are in nice but not amazing houses paying 10 - 15k in property taxes. That being said Belton ISD is maxed out on bond money. This isn’t uncommon in Texas. I’m honestly ecstatic that Texas has high property taxes. You are in complete control of how the state taxes you unlike SALT states.
That means they didn’t look and adjust based on tax laws changes.
