Has liberal virtue signaling just replaced lazy religion?

Everyone under 40 has these people on their social media. People who post pictures of the caged kids, talk about our duties to people’s of color, LGBTQ stuff, etc and yet you know them well enough to know they aren’t doing an iota of charity work in their communities. Has liberalism just filled the void of religion for these folks?
Twenty or thirty years ago these same younger folks would just show up in a pew on Sunday and call it a day. Now Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc have replaced that.

Let's put it this way. I've worked in higher ed for nearly a decade. Everywhere I've been, I read op-eds in student newspapers about how we desperately need to take better care of the environment.
Yet, when I walk around campuses, I will see trash which has been tossed on the ground literally within a few feet of a trash can or recycling bin.

The most litter filled neighborhoods in Louisiana are poor minority ones. Yet I don’t get the feeling liberals are directing environmental angst in that direction

I would say liberals tend to be the virtue signalers due to the republicans being more-family/religion-oriented. I see at least 5 things on stories everyday about "oh my god unlock these kids" or "oh my god trumps suck a POS", and i know for a fact those same people are no angels lol
