A man of conviction who didn't forget to bring guns to the insurrection.

Duty is the sublimest word in our language.

Do your duty in all things. You can not do more, you should never wish to do less.

Back in the 80's, the black student union held a campus parade for the birthday of MLK. It was done in an almost "stick it in your face" manner as their "parade route" passed right in front of the fraternities (down Dalrymple).

Not to be outdone, the Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) had its own party on its front lawn (on Dalrymple) celebrating the birthday of Robert E. Lee -- Stars & Bars EVERYWHERE.

There was a huge uproar and the black students went ballistic. Of course, there was that little pesky thing called the Constitution that used to exist on college campuses. I think we all realize that if the same incident happened today, every member of that fraternity (whether they were part of the celebration, or not) would be summarily expelled.

ETA: Lost in all the commotion was the fact that the black students held the parade on the birthday of Robert E. Lee (1/19) as MLK's birthday was a few days earlier (1/15).

Also, remember, there was no MLK Day at this point in time. I don't think the left had beatified him quite yet.

A man who stood for his beloved state...though, he was torn over the mission and his loyalty. If I were the average Southerner back then, my thoughts would have been that he was a true hero, for slavery wasn't even practiced by the average Southerner.

The removal of his statue has brought about such a dramatic reduction in crime they should put up a statue of him to commemorate his contributions to crime reduction!

Faced with a very tough choice. Had to choose between his home town, his home state, his community, family and friends and - his country, the USA.

Very sad that he, and so many others, were compelled by circumstances beyond their control to make that choice.

Yep, all those generals, Lt Generals, all up and down the military ranks were all on the same military and were colleagues who had all gone to West Point with each other and all knew each other personally, up until 1860. That's one aspect of the war that always gets glossed over.

His "conviction" was to fight to keep slavery. No thanks.

Best thing I love about Lee - His house sits atop a hill at Arlington. They may have buried those yankee scum around his home but he got the last word! His home is a memorial in the middle of Arlington! I toured his home. Nothing in it at the time, for obvious reasons but what I didnt know until that time was that he is a descendent of George Washington's wife.

I prefer generals who don't end up surrendering their army to the town drunk. But that's just me.

No other military leader in the annals of American history has benefited as much from propaganda as Robert E. Lee. When Grant passed away in 1885, his was the largest funeral ever held in the United States - eclipsing that of Abraham Lincoln - up to that time. From the late-1880s and onward, Lost Causers (led chiefly by Jubal Early) denigrated the latter while holding the former on a pedestal that was (mostly) undeserved.
