Therein lies one of the big the inherent risks of a "symbolic" protest. You can't always guarantee the public has the "correct" perception.

Agreed. That's why they shouldn't be using the NA as a crutch for their cause. Maybe they could gather up on their off day and have a meeting with someone who might actually have the power to make a difference. People on FB and Twitter sure as hell won't help them out.

The National Anthem is not the anthem of the military. It's the anthem of the Nation. They are protesting what are perceived social injustices in the Nation

Nobody said it did. The point is this woman who has seen more racism towards her than any of these athletes today still disagrees with their protest. Because she knows how bad it has been and how much better it is now. Is there still work to do? Of course. But in HER opinion, the protest is disrespectful.

And that's why at least half of the country is pissed at the players. I liken it to them being disrespectful to our Nation like a kid is disrespectful to his parents.

Believe me, a 71 yr old black woman has been exposed to unreal raceist behavior in her life.

Growing up in Montgomery in the 1980's, most of my teachers were black women that would be in that age range now (maybe a little older). Many of them had known MLK and Rosa Parks personally and had taken part in the bus boycott. My 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Carter, was next door neighbors with and good friends with Rosa Parks. Looking back I feel very privileged to have learned about the civil rights movement from those women. As a kid, it felt like ancient history, but in reality it had only been 20 years or so . I'm sure some of the wounds still felt quite fresh to those women.

But, without exception, every one of them displayed and demanded respect for the flag. If they felt that way I have a hard time understanding why 20 something year old guys have such issue with it.

Because they haven't experienced racism as it was 30 years ago. That's why I always chuckle when the 20 year olds on here feel superior to 50 year olds and up when discussing life experiences.

Imagine not being able to get food in a restaurant because of your skin.... that was 50 years ago. We've come a long way in regards to race relations.

Then why reference the military at all? Why the appeal to authority? If no one is claiming that the protesters are attacking the military, why is this woman's opinion being given any credence?

Actually if you were to read CK original narrative on the whole matter, he decided to protest The US Flag over perceived injustices by racism in some police municipalities.

What is the female term for Uncle Tom?

you do realize Tom was the hero of that story, and that the phrase "Uncle Tom" as a form of insult is totally out of context of the story....

Correct. It all started with perceived inequalities in policing. Nothing to do with the military.

That black lady has probably seen horrifying racism in her life and knows to make white people feel good about themselves means that she's less likely to get beaten or called the n word.

at the municipal level.

He chose to disrespect the US Flag and the National Anthem at the National level.

The US Military is the visible force that guarantees the liberties and freedoms The Flag and Anthem stand for.
