I see a lot of conversations here about H1Bs and other conversations about the southern border and even less around workshare arrangements with various countries. Now add in AI too…

All of these impact our jobs - blue collar and white collar. I’m not sure that I’ve seen this conversation had together in one place.

Many here support one or the other in some way for various reasons.

In 2014 I noticed more work move to India. In 2026, all office jobs are moving overseas or they are being brought here by visas.

Field labor is being completed overseas (modules), and non licensed trades completed by our friends coming over the border.

- Engineering done in India
- Engineering done locally via H1Bs
- Accounting and billing in South America
- KPI / analyst work in India
- Large scale fabrication done oversees and shipped in on modules (labor jobs)
- Residential construction and other miscellaneous non licensed trades being occupied by those coming over the southern border. Either by cash, or by H2As and H2Bs. Crawfishing, farming, etc..

I’m 40 and have young kids. Growing up I’d hear, “go to school to be a Dr., Lawyer, or Engineer”. I’m not sure that’s sound advice anymore. Everyone is now saying, “go learn a trade”, but those jobs are being outsourced also.

You may say, “well it’s only the corporations”, but big corporations / supply chain is driving us to minimize use of local companies. They want us to leverage our scale for perceived competitiveness.

How screwed are we? And what advice are we giving younger kids in our family now?

For the record, I have been very blessed. I’ve made good money in the trades before going back to school, and have since built a really good professional career.

Some of you may think I’m young. To some I’m probably old. I’m not someone thinks the older generation stuck it to us. And I also don’t think that every young person is lacking work ethic.

I genuinely wonder if everyone can see the bigger picture and I’m curious of what the future looks like. How we guide our children…

The idea of this scares me a bit considering some of the slapdash things done by Indian designers, such as the highway that looked like a Mario Kart track.

It’s interesting that the boomers here love Indian engineers so much

The engineers driving the trains in India run over like 1000 people a day

ETA: To OP I would say that it’s donover

Basically if you’re younger than 45 now you’ll never retire. You better leave your kids a good inheritance or they’ll never have anything

This is my exact argument against H1-B’s… The job market will inevitably shrink due to AI. There’s no stopping it.

So, why do I want my college age kids competing for jobs in a shrinking job pool to H1-B’s? These folks haven’t paid any price or made any sacrifice to deserve the blessings of this country.

The blessings should be reserved for those whose ancestors sacrificed for this country.

Original pilgrim settlers escaping religious torment
Irish and Chinese who built the railroad
Mexicans who fought along side Texans to gain independence from Mexico
We all know how much the black community suffered.
Indians haven’t done shlt and have been given everything. And I’m sick of it.

you are still much better off going to be a doctor or an engineer.

AI is not going to take jobs from people, but people in those professions that know how to use AI, specifically how to use it to code or setup agentic process, will take jobs from people.

as far as doctors go....there will prolly never be enough, they work shite tons of hours and thats with the rise of NP and PA taking on a huge chunk of a GPs job with the rise of urgent cares.

there is a huge pushback on h1b. will be gone by 2030

engineering done is india is a shite show and most is coming back to the states

accounting and billing will move more back to the states with the rise of AI

fabrication is already moving back. fabrication and manufacturing was mainly done overseas because distance to the projects stopped mattering. with global disruptions to supply chains, tarrifs that equal the playing field etc distance matters again and thats why you are seeing these things come back

residential construction was run a lot by illegals...that is already stopping

I will say this...if you kid goes and gets a law degree or engineering degree....they will always be able to find work, period. might not be as a lawyer or technically an engineering role, but they will always be able to find quality work so long as they can communicate effectively and understand finance.

im a few years older than you...my oldest will prolly be going for mech eng with minors in math, nuclear and aerospace engineering. Will go to get an MBA eventually too

middle schooler will prolly go engineering or finance

other is in elementary school so way too early.

imo if you get a degree where you learn to think critically and learn how to communicate with people, you will be fine. understanding how to use AI in the future is going to be extremely important. just like it was important to learn to use spreadsheets and the internet in the late 90s and early 2000s.

not just h1b....stop allowing shite countries to send kids here to be educated.

1) non citizens on temp visa should end period but certainly they should not be able to get a mortage

2) texas needs to stop allowing their kids to count as citizens in terms of % of international students they allow. its bullshite those here on visas count as texans and not international students. look no further than the student section at UT

I like your optimism, but I’ve worked for two very large publicly traded companies and the push to use India is stronger than ever. It’s not letting up. Anything that can be done in an office is moving overseas.

Major companies are spending big money completing 3D scans of all of their assets. It’s not just impacting engineering.

Any residential or commercial project in my region is being occupied by southern border immigrants.

I believe to an extent that productive members of society will be ok, but it will be extremely competitive in both the trades and the white collar jobs.

We joke about crawfish farming a lot here…

It’s still strange for me to see all of the immigrants working the crawfish, sugar cane fields, rice fields

It doesn’t matter if you’re a laborer or college educated. You’re competing globally now.

I work for one of the largest oil companies in the world.....we tried going to india for things.....including optimization and engineering....yea thats over now as it is with most other large oil and chemical companies for the most part

3d scans are normal for all engineering now

that has slowed a ton since the ICE crackdowns...this will take time but over the next 8-10 years you will see big time change here

H1Bs

tide has turned on this. Desantis came out this week calling for the program to be cancelled. Look for other governors to follow suite and I look for some on the federal level that are eyeing the next election to do so.

Have to get texas on board though, thats the biggest domino.

i look for big big changes on the immigration front. real americans are fed the frick up. black and white. especially with Indians and Muslims.

i think there will be a shortage of people who understand how to use the emerging technologies, especially agentic AI, and that will cause a shift in the market.

Trades will be fine, already been a huge push for them. But despiste what many, mainly white collar guys, like to tell you....the trades suck to work in big time. fine when in your 20s....by 30s you start questioning life choices and if working a bunch of OT just to make 100k a year is worth it. By 40 you better have moved in to management of some form because if not, its miserable and you are hurt a lot. and median wages still suck despite the PT and OT thinking everyone can become a business owner.

white collar there will be a huge shift. we have an idea of what that will look like but not 100% sure yet.

bottom-line there will always be room for those with an engineering degree that can communicate and think critically. might not be in engineering per se but always a market for those skills.

why does that surprise you? illegal immigrants and migrant workers have always been used in industries like that where labor cost is 1 thing that can sink the business quickly.

You’re spot on 777… I live here in North Texas and my sons middle school is easily 60 to 70% Indian.

Our governments number 1 responsibility is to protect its citizens…. Needless to say, I don’t feel protected.

they have to fricking go!!!

its nausating what these fricks...and that goes for republicans too....have done to texas in the last 20 years. its fricking sickening

then when bo french just points it out....everyone, including standing republican senator call him a racist. its not racist to say that an disproportionate amount of south asians, mainly indians, are being let into Texas and texas universities and even if it is

who gives a frick!!! frick indians on h1b or anyone on h1b.

if we cant do away with h1b program, need to make it a 250k fee to apply and 500k minimum salary. if these people are as important as the the companies say.....they will have no problem paying. this goes for not just h1b but all temp visa.

I just left a meeting detailing the opposite.

I have a work trip overseas scheduled for later in the year as part of this initiative.

Engineering scans have been common for a while. These are different.

they will get tired of the bullshite calls in the middle of the night, lack of understanding basic concepts and mistake after mistake

sure hope so. i know my last company still liked to use chinese manufacturing but had pretty much given up on optimization the indians were doing. another plant in our area gave up on the optimization couple years ago and the refinery I work at...yea the idea of using over seas firms is 100% dead

It doesn’t surprise me, but it’s a reminder that we’re being hit from both sides.

My grandparents and their parents were small farmers in Louisiana. The family grew and the land was carved up. My papaw was the first to go to college.

That’s not that long ago that we used to farm our own land.

My point of this whole post was to connect the dots between both labor and white collar professional jobs and how both are competing globally now.

It’s above site level. The decision makers don’t have to answer the calls.

But really it doesn’t matter because India works a split schedule. They work while we’re sleeping and they work while where at work.

It’s not new to us. We’ve been doing it for a while. It just keeps growing. And now it’s not just engineers & projects. The scope is expanding significantly.

Public records reveal a clear family-money-politics loop with Sen. John Cornyn. Cornyn has aggressively defended the EB-5 immigrant investor visa program, despite repeated fraud scandals in Texas. All while his daughter Haley Cornyn works as the Legislative Affairs Manager at Greenberg Traurig and lobbies clients who benefit from the programs he protects. The firm itself has structured billions in EB-5 deals and sends PAC money back to Cornyn.

Over the years, Cornyn has called EB-5 a “major economic driver for Texas,” co-sponsored reauthorization bills, and in April 2025 stated he was working to keep the program intact “added on top” of any new high-investment visa options.

This as Texas has seen multiple major EB-5 scams.

• America Modern Green (Houston): Raised $49.5 million from 90 Chinese investors, misused $20.5 million on unrelated projects, leading to SEC fraud charges and a settlement.

• USA Now Regional Center (McAllen): Fraudulently raised at least $5 million, diverting funds into a Ponzi scheme, personal debts, luxury cars, and a restaurant. Investors lost everything and never received visas.

• Additional Texas-linked cases include a $52 million EB-5 fraud scheme involving Danhong “Jean” Chen, who was sentenced to 30 months in prison in January 2026 after years of investigation and extradition.

These cases highlight fraud, fund misuse, and risks Cornyn’s continued support overlooks.

Haley Cornyn at Greenberg Traurig

Haley Cornyn (Texas lobbyist ID 65594) currently serves as Legislative Affairs Manager in Texas Government Law and Policy at Greenberg Traurig’s Austin office. Her registration address matches the firm’s Austin location exactly.

According to Texas Ethics Commission disclosures aggregated on Transparency USA, she has reported a cumulative maximum compensation of $871,260 across all clients since she began registering.

Her active 2025–2026 clients include high-profile entities such as.

• Citigroup Washington Inc. (dba Citigroup Government Affairs Inc.): $0–$22,239.99
• Alibaba Group Holding LTD: $0–$22,239.99

(Thanks to @AmyMek for this data)

Other notable clients on her roster.

• Healthcare: Fresenius Medical Care, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital
• Technology: LEO Technologies, Asurion, DailyPay
• Finance: Aflac, Beyond Finance
• Multiple Texas cities including Dallas, Plano, Missouri City, and Port Arthur.

Citigroup Connection: Citigroup, which actively finances EB-5 bridge loans and project funding, increased its H-1B visa petitions by nearly 20% year-over-year into FY2026. This surge stands in stark contrast to declines at peer institutions like Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase amid tighter immigration scrutiny and higher compliance costs.

Greenberg Traurig’s EB-5 Windfall

The firm where Haley Cornyn currently works aggressively brands itself as a “go-to industry leader” in the EB-5 space. Greenberg Traurig’s Global Immigration & Compliance Practice has structured $12 billion+ in EB-5 capital deployments across hundreds of projects.

One GT shareholder alone, Jennifer Hermansky, has personally overseen more than $3 billion in EB-5 capital raises and has guided thousands of investor families through the process.

The firm has filed and handled 8,000+ I-526 immigrant investor petitions. GT maintains an active public promotion machine, including its EB-5 Insights blog and the popular “Immigration Insights” podcast series.

In February 2026, the firm released “Top 26 EB-5 Insights for 2026,” with episodes hosted by co-chairs Kate Kalmykov and Jennifer Hermansky.

These materials heavily promote grandfathering strategies to lock in the current $800,000 Targeted Employment Area investment threshold before the Reform and Integrity Act (RIA) grandfathering protections expire on September 30, 2026.

They also advise on source-of-funds documentation, avoiding delays, and navigating anticipated fee hikes and regulatory changes.

PAC Money Flows Back to Cornyn

• Texas GT PAC: $6,700 to Cornyn (listed among top recipients).
• Federal GT PAC (C00266585): $5,000 to Cornyn’s Alamo PAC in the 2023–2024 cycle.

The pattern is unmistakable.

Cornyn preserves the visa programs ? his daughter at Greenberg Traurig lobbies direct beneficiaries ? the firm pockets billions structuring deals ? the firm’s PAC and clients rewards Cornyn with contributions.

All activity is disclosed and legal under current rules. Yet the numbers paint a troubling picture of family enrichment tied to policies that have enabled fraud in Texas while benefiting connected corporate interests.

Primary sources: Texas Ethics Commission/Transparency USA, FEC/OpenSecrets, SEC enforcement actions, DOL H-1B data, and Greenberg Traurig’s own EB-5 materials.

I want to thank @AmyMek and an article I stumbled upon at The Dallas Express(dallasexpress.com). Her reporting on this had me running down this part of the Cornyn Visa corruption rabbit hole. Some data was used from her article/posts.
