I can't imagine the feeling of the sudden realization that you're not going home after this. Not gonna have one last dinner with your family, or sleep in your bed tonight. Or ever again. Your next meal tonight will be prison food and your bed will be a cot in a cell with a stranger. And that'll be the case for a few decades.

The sudden realization that the world will be entirely different next time you step out into it, if you even make it that far.

That has to hit like a ton of fricking bricks when that verdict is read, but he earned every bit of it. At least he'll get to live his life in the free world eventually when he's about 50, Austin will never get that chance. Or that one last meal with momma, or to sleep in his own bed.
