Poor thing. That woman needs to just stay home and rest. Maybe watch old movies and have the great grand children visit. Poor lady is just too old.

I don't want Thomas to retire because you just don't know if anyone would be as hardline conservative as he

Are you really willing to risk the 2020 elections and beyond with a possible chance of democrats replacing Thomas with a communist just so you can get a few more years out of him?

RBG made a catastrophic mistake that's costing her her peaceful retirement years she worked hard for and democrats are scared shitless she could die under Trump.

Clarence Thomas is awesome but it's not just about him, it's about making sure Communists don't get control of the court. It's absolutely not worth the risk.

Heed the lesson of RBG's mistake. Anthony Kennedy did just that.

If some people in this thread have their way, liberals will/would be looking at 85-90 year old Clarence Thomas like we're looking at RBG right now today.

frick that noise.

I understand that. I'm just saying that you have to hedge and protect yourself against risk.

RBG should've retired in Obama's first term and she chose to risk the 2012 election and that gamble worked out for her when Obama was reelected and democrats still controlled the senate. Could've retired right there as the replacement nominee would've gotten through pretty easily.

Nope.

She still chose to hang on for Hillary and a democrat senate to replace her. It was a 99.9% sure thing.

Nope. That didn't work out either and now she's still pissing herself in diapers on the Court.

Clarence Thomas is smarter than that and he will not let that happen to him.

My take is RBG wasn't reading tea leaves. She had assurance that it was rigged in Hillary's favor. And they tried, but failed, as we all could sense during those strange waning hours on Election Night when they refused to call it. Trump has now blown things up, and Thomas may be able to get a more honest assessment. Trump is on track to roll through 2020 easy right now, and 2024 is a complete mystery. Give it time.

So she had more certainty than anybody the world that Hillary was going to win and chose to wait for her?

And we have people in this thread including you that has less certainty and no way of knowing how assured the next election is and wants to risk 2020 for a few more years out of Thomas?

Stupid.

Can you say this with complete more than 110%, the sky is blue certainty? More than what you claim RBG had when the election was "rigged" for Hillary?

You can't.

And I'm not a fan of taking stupid gambles like RBG.

Thomas needs quit while he's ahead and get off the court next year.

Dems wet dream and you might have enough RINOS to Garland that vote.

Be very careful what you wish for.

A conservative being replaced by a conservative will go smoothly. Quite different from potential RBG fight.

2019 is a non election year, we will likely have a few more republicans like 53 or 54 in the senate and that will help us to not have to rely on Collins and Murk.

When the window is open and you're dealing with something so fickle like the political climate, general electorate with changing demos and 50 different elections, you jump on that opportunity when you can.

And I hope Thomas does.

Thomas is an incredible justice. He cannot be replaced. He is 70. RBG is 85. He could make it through Trump, the next POTUS, and into the next one. I understand you are risk averse. But Thomas retiring even right now is a risk because as I said you cannot find with any assurance any justice that will be as steadfastly on our side as him.

I don't want to lose our GREATEST justice who still has YEARS left just because we're SCARED of MAYBE getting a liberal one day if it HAPPENS to work out a certain way with elections and his health
