I am all for a strong defense, but can’t they just perform an audit first and find out where are the money is going and cut wastes? Isn’t that what most people do when running a family budget?

Congress can always propose a new budget if Trump vetoes this Omnibus bill.
Hell, congress can get 2/3rds majority and make the Omnibus bill veto proof.

Why do we need so much military spending? It’s as wasteful as the entitlement handouts. We don’t fight wars with tanks and troops in 2018

quote:Budget reconciliation is trickier than you think with 51 votes and the 51st liable to be absent for chemotherapy at any given time. Example: Collins/Murkowski would probably force an amendment on the Obamacare CSRs they were promised during tax reform, which Dems would gladly help them pass. But that would also lead to the HFC killing it in the House.

You are absolutely right. There are just too much waste in the military spending. We could spend less and build a stronger defense.

Flatline!! I am for cutting it.

If this doesn't work they will parade 30 million children that are going to die if this isn't signed through the streets of DC.
Sometimes you have to say NO

The greatest military stories in American history are of prudent generals like Grant and Patton who make due with threadbare equipment, support lines, etc.
Grant achieved more with NOTHING than every other Union general achieved with vast amounts of supplies, top notch equipment, etc.
Obviously our military already has the best of the best. I'm MAGA as frick, but 80% of that military spending bill should be used on infrastructure and reinforcement of our domestic mainframe

I've been auditing defense contractors for over 30 years.
Here's how things really go down.
Buying commands either waive the audit requirements or we do one.
They take our report and check the box saying they got one done. They have a rule saying that if their negotiation objectives don't incorporate at least 70% of our recommendations they have to get higher up approval.
So they always write in their planning memo that they will. Then they go and ignore our recommendations, and say they tried but could not get agreement.

That would be too logical. Instead, we should just spend more money to make up for the money we lost.

have they outlined exactly how all the money will help the opioid crisis?

The President should veto it. If Congress overturns the veto, so be it, but then President's people should go through that bill with a fine tooth comb, and he should call out all of the bullshite contained within. Hell, they need to do that with every spending bill.

This budget is getting veto’d.

VA gets billions more - won't fix the VA.
DoD gets big increase and that's OK but it doesn't need this large of a bump. Military gets cost of living adjustments. Sometimes they are right on the mark, sometimes not but usually not too bad and not too far off. Don't need to add a pay raise on top of it.
As military you already get housing and medical covered. That's worth about $1500 per month for most people. Perhaps more. You also get subsistence allowance or the ability to eat 3 meals a day for free at the dining facility.
Being active duty is worth $20,000 or so, over and above base pay. Don't need the pay raise part.
Have to be prudent where these increases take place. Under Carter military pay had been lagging and he did nothing about it. Reagan came in and fixed that. For the most part military pay has been OK since then, except for some bit of the Clinton years.

Knowing Congress, they will declare war today against some shithole country so their threat on defense holds merit.
