Go woke, go broke: College Edition

Birmingham-Southern will likely know their fate this week. They have asked Alabama lawmakers for $37 million to stay open. If they do not get an influx of cash, they will close in May.

Faculty are meeting with students this week to discuss transfer options.
BSC has been on the woke train for years. Their homecoming festivities featured a drag show just this past fall. A few years ago, a Christian group was kicked off of campus, only to be let back on after a group of influential donors threatened to pull donations.
Here's what these small woke colleges in the South (Looking at you Trinity, Centenary, Millsaps) fail to realize. You can't go full woke. Your alumni base that went to your schools when you were a cut above academically are mostly conservative. The woke brigade that you has been marticulating for the last decade can change their social media profile pictures but they can't give money to save you.
This has been happening for a while. COVID sped it up. Millsaps and Centenary are next. Centenary's adding football as a last ditch effort.

Most colleges are. No one blinks when you have an LGBT club. But when you say your campus is fully committed to LGBT causes and those against it aren't welcome. Guess what, those students aren't coming.
If you are in Alabama, you need conservative students to survive.

The president of millsaps just left to take over at Sewanee. Sewanee will take a while longer (since the endowment is much bigger), but it’ll be destroyed soon as well.

I know this was a figurative statement but both my neighbor - a good German import from Munich; and a family friend are both tied to the school. One is an classical art instructor, the other works campus security.
I agree with the wokeism statements but believe the Birmingham Southern College debacle are more of a result of bad financial management from the previous school president.

BSC was a cut above everyone in state even your other little private schools like Samford and Montevallo. I'm old enough to remember guidance counselor calling it "the Harvard of Alabama" and everyone agreeing it was the most selective and prestigious school in the state. I don't think it's even top 10 now.

It’s going to be a blood bath for small private lib arts schools. They are obsolete.

Correction: The Millsaps President left to become a Vice President at Sewanee. Word on the street is Millsaps has 2-3 years left, max.

Yep. The ones that did not pivot to additional revenue with online degree offerings are toast. Sat on a committee that opined that a third of NCAA Division III schools (where a lot of these schools are athletically) would be closed by 2030.
I'm very close to the BSC situation, having grown up in Alabama with family that are alumni and who sold land to the college in the 90s.
Here's the truth of their financial trouble:
Early 2000s - started pushing LGBT issues and alienating alumni base.
Mid 2000s - went Division I in sports. Was a total disaster. After their four year requirement was done, they went back. Students protested. In order to save face, they said they would go Division III and add football, which negated the savings from going DI-D3.
2010s - Had the most woke president of the Associated Colleges of the South. Finally fired her, but replaced with a military guy who had no idea how to run a college. By then we have over a decade of terrible decisions. Was known as the gay college in Alabama, which drove off potential conservative students.
Other small colleges started adding revenue by adding graduate degrees and online options. BSC remained "committed to the traditional student experience."
Late 2010s - New president decided "If we build it, students will come." and racked up major debt building new buildings and renovations others.
2020 - COVID hit and BSC made more bad decisions, alienating students.
2022 - Reality hits, BSC does not have the money to operate past May, 2023. Asks Alabama taxpayers for a bailout. Does not appear it will happen.
May, 2023 - BSC will likely close operations.
2023-2024 - Will the Alabama legislature allow Auburn to takeover the campus? Two small colleges in Tennessee have closed in recent years (Lambuth and Martin Methodist). The University of Memphis took over one and University of Tennessee took over the other. UAB wouldn't like Auburn coming in, but the physical plant of BSC is in good condition.

the BSC folks I know don't seem to care if it closes or not. it's a tiny school for rich kids. i don't see why any public funds should be used to bail it out.
